I'm very broke right now. As a result I have been eatting rice and pasta salad because that's pretty much what I got to work with. What is annoying is I will get full at the time of eatting but my stomach will start growling only a few hours later. Like I ate a ton of rice and pasta salad at 1:30 and here is 4pm and my stomach is growling. NO FAIR ( Read more... )

The problem is that pasta and rice are carbs, only carbs, so you face a multi-tiered problem. Your body reacts to the carb explosion in four ways that are interrelated. You get an increase in insulin, the carbs covert to sugar, the insulin tells your body to store the carbs/sugars in your fat cells, and the insane isulin amounts make you....

wait for it...

hungry again.

If you can afford dry beans to soak, then cook and mix with the pasta and the rice, you will get a mix of protein and carbs, and your body will be happier. Red or black beans are a natural mix with rice, and cannelini (white kidney) beans would pair well with pasta.

The only reason I suggested dry beans is because they are cheap as hell, but they do of course require a soak before cooking. Here in MKE I can get canned organic beans in an "off" brand for about $1 to $1.20 a can, so I rarely buy dry, because I often cook by the seat of my pants and realize I should have been soaking dry beans a day earlier if I want to pull off what I want to cook TONIGHT.

Come to think of it, if you can spare a few more dollars, pair pasta, some veggie broth (or water,) some kidney beans, a can of tomatoes and a little mirepoix sauteed (I sometimes grab a little celery, carrot, and onion from a salad bar in a grocery store for a quick mirepoix,) you could whip up a giant batch of minestrone and freeze leftovers.

I costed it out once, and a batch of minestrone costs me about $15 to make a huge pot, and that is two full means for Whendee, Scout and I, and usually we end up with some in the freezer or coming to work with Whendee or I for lunches.

Anyways, mix up the carbs with a protein. Beans is cheep.
