Lately everyone in my grade has sort of been freaking out about what they want to do after graduation. After all, the Abitur is only one more year away. If I said I was not one of them, I'd lie. One thing I knew right from the start, though, was that I wanted to spend several months abroad. Mom suggested an internship - I think mainly because she wants me back home as soon as possible - dad suggested Work & Travel. Since their ideas weren't what I had in mind.
After doing some research on the internet, I finally settled on becoming an au-pair. That means I'll be spending 12 months in a family where I take care of the household and the kids, while I'm also able to attend a college course. Sounds tempting, right? I love kids and I've always wanted to spend some time in the U.S., so why not take the opportunity and combine it? Plus I "get" a 13th month to travel round the country, if I want to. Apart from me probably getting pretty homesick and some other little things concerning organizing everything, there are only advantages. The most important one is probably that it's relatively cheap.
There's only one thing I need to work on: 200h of childcare are required as reference. Of course I have experience in childcare, but 200 hours? Probably not. I don't even know if my community administration will write some sort of letter of reference for me in order to prove that I worked with children. If not, I'm screwed. I intend to do an internship in a kindergarten as another reference, yet I doubt that would be enough. We'll see.
Mom's not too happy about my decision. 13 months are quite long and she doesn't really want me to be gone that long. Although she doesn't say I, I can feel it.
Still, I need to get out of my comfort zone, and if it's necessary to go abroad for that, then U.S., here I come!
