So this has got me a bit bent out of shape.
Disclaimer - I have never (to my knowledge) been sporked, MST’d, or PPC’d. I’m not some butthurt author off on a tirade. If I have been/were to be sporked, MST’d or PPC’d, well, I won’t/wouldn’t get worked up about it. That’s not the point I’m going to try to make.
I just don’t get it. I see the private appeal, but the commentary is almost always dull and badly written, and where the tv series MST3k had a) humor and b) a certain degree of affection for the films they made fun of, applying the same treatment to fiction written by, like, twelve year old girls just doesn’t seem fair. First off, as hilarious as it is to see some of their clumsy attempts at writing sex or whatnot, and as incensed as you may be about some kid splitting up your OTP with a poorly written self-insert, no one else finds your clumsy attempts at satire amusing.
And PPC-ing something - I get it when you sort of take a generic badfic which you’ve concocted yourself, then dump in your characters. But otherwise it just seems masturbatory. “Look, I’m making fun of writers who are so obviously beneath me!” And then there’s the problem of the ‘agent’ characters - they are self-inserts, plain and simple. They are self-inserts who are on the canon character’s sides, crusading mightily against a universe that is in chaos, against the ineptitude of poor writers! Self inserts who have the final say over what is canon and what is not, or what interpretation is most valid.
IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME.
