I recently discovered that I've developed a...rather unusual...reaction towards zombies.
Spirit Week was held at my school a few weeks ago and each grade was given a hallway to decorate and a theme to follow. The juniors had the theme "Horror Movies". All the walls of their hallway were covered with various painted scenes and dialogue from famous horror movies. When I first saw the pictures, I was really impressed. Using liberal amounts of red and black paint, the juniors recreated a place filled with pretty much every horror element in existence. They even covered the overhead lights with transparent red plastic wrap, dyeing the whole hallway with a bloody light.
One of the drawings featured a graveyard with zombies pushing their way out of the dirt, like something you'd see in a typical zombie/graveyard/BRAAIIINSSSS movie. The zombies' faces were twisted the way good dead zombie faces should be, with eyes dangling out and partly wrapped in bloody bandages. In all fairness, it was horrifying. But then my brain threw a memory-brick at me and I was forcibly reminded of another graveyard quite similar to the painting: Thriller Bark in One Piece.
Seeing hands shooting out of the graveyard brought back memories of the time the Straw Hats encountered rising-from-the-dead zombies. And what did Luffy do? He pushed them back into the ground.
I started laughing right there in the middle of the hallway. Luckily only a few people were around so I didn’t get too many awkward stares. But after that, I started seeing Thriller Bark examples everywhere in those pictures. The poster that contained the line “Five, Six, grab your crucifix” was especially reminiscent of Usopp decked in anti-ghost gear, waving a cross and shouting “Evil be gone! Evil be gone!” Even days later, I couldn’t walk down the hallway without smiling. Who can resist cute, little shadow-animated zombies? Or even big blue ones?
Nowadays, just mentioning zombies or ghosts (“Horohorohoro!”) is enough to make me chortle. Oh, I know Oda-sensei made the entire Thriller Bark a huge monster mash, so my reactions are at least somewhat justified. But Halloween’s coming up and friends are suggesting that we go out watch some horror movies. Chances are, I’ll find SOME aspect of the movie similar to Thriller Bark start giggling, which is strictly prohibited during horror movies. After all, no one wants their fun ruined. Ah well, back to those action-y films I like best. ;)
