How do you handle fear? for justprompts

He was shaking with nerves, sleep-deprivation, and he knew... a bit of starvation. He had a tendency not to eat when things got.. intense. And had always found it ironic that McKay did the opposite. And maybe.. a little cute.

Teal'c wasn't even a full step behind him through the gate, quickly followed by Beckett and Jenny, Kitty bringing up the rear in her kickass!Xmen uniform. They were going to get Rodney back and there was no fucking way they could lose. Of course, what he wouldn't share was that he was ready to die for this mission. He was ready to die for most missions, is why he didn't see it worth mentioning, but this still felt.. like his fault. And he would take the proverbial (or literal!) bullet for McKay.. anyday.

Biolife scanners brought them to the center of the city, which was deserted. Not a Genii to be seen. Not a sprig of holly out of place (what? The Genii camps had always reminded him of those live Christmas reenactment tours). A voice in his ear said, "Follow that trail" too soft for anyone else to hear... He turned on his heal, a path appearing before his eyes. Shrugging, he began to follow, waving everyone along when it became apparent nothing was going to eat them.

The trail petered off in front of a large mote..

A mote?! he thought, watching with wide eyes as a drawbridge lowered at their feet. Shrugging again, he took a step onto the bridge and led the way across.. and into the large stone fortress. Still no sign of the Genii but then he heard the screams...

"Rodney!" he yelled back, the name echoing back to him uselessly. But at least he could hear McKay... Not looking to see if the others followed, he aimed his gun in front of him and practically sprinted up at least a half dozen flights of slippery stone steps.

When he reached the end of the corridor, the lights flickered and gave out. He put on his infrared glasses and turned to make sure everyone had followed. They had. Still training his weapon ahead, he opened the door and went in...

There was a flash of light and then nothing for a minute. Just cool, empty silence. Then he heard the screams and the little mechanical feet... The Replicators. Wincing, he ignored his temporary blindness and ran towards the sound, shooting every spider.. thing to dust, Rodney's words echoing through his head. Not useful words either.

"This is like that game, Asteroids," he had said, clambering into the jumper. "I'm no good at Asteroids!"

And that was how he felt, scared and so out-of-his-element. The replicators turned on him and that was when he saw Rodney, still whole, still safe... shackled to the wall like some medieval prisoner, which John supposed he was. Sighing with relief, he stumbled over to McKay, working at the lock as Teal'c took care of the bugs. His chest was flush with his and they were both breathless, and Sheppard did the only thing that seemed right: he kissed him. It was a brief kiss but as he pulled away he could still feel the pressure building, the way they fit together... He was never going to let this happen again until the next time.

Ignoring his team as he got Rodney unshackled, he grabbed the man's arm, starting down the stairs... when the castle began to crumble around them. They got down four flights of stairs before there were none anymore, no walls to support them as the roof came down on their heads...

He woke up breathing hard, his heart hammering in his chest. Today was the day he had to save Meredith. An hour and fifteen minutes of thriller dream-sequence would have to be enough sleep because he sure as hell wasn't going back to bed.
