Fic - Comment Fic War Round Up!

Mar 18, 2011 23:43

Hey guys, I got a few hits in at unsettledink's second Comment Fic War! Didn't have time to do as much as I'd hoped, but I really enjoyed writing for a new fandom--- Rango! I only saw the movie a few days ago, and when I saw that my friend anneka_neko had started a thread for the fandom, I couldn't resist the urge to try my hand! I think I developed a bit of a crush ( Read more... )

Ugh. The moment we walked out of the movie theatre, I turned to my companion and declared, "I have a total crush on the snake." This companion, being a reader of my GMD fics and others, was not surprised in the least. XD

The Bill Nighy voice opened the floodgates for me. Then it was the swagger and the sinuous motion. But really? The clincher was his sheer brutality, especially in a movie that had been fairly goofy and tame until that point. To have someone suddenly show up and start threatening to send people to Hell was just--- outrageously sexy. Unf unf unf. Rattlesnake Jake, will you be my nasty bad-ass Valentine? *___*

Eeeeeee, I'm so glad you liked that little bit of GMD. I dearly love that pairing and I really miss writing for them! I've just been working on a major writing project set in Victorian London, and when it's time for writing fic these days, my brain needs a break from the 19th century. That's why I've been cranking out these Megamind fics--- it's sort of a vacation to write contemporary characters once in a while. Soon as I get this first draft of the book finished, I'm coming home to Basil and Ratigan. I miss them. They are my favorites. <333

Thanks for reading and commenting! I'm very happy you enjoyed the ficlets. ^_^

LOL I didn't even realize who it was at first, and I was biased early on to like him as a character because (1) I like snakes. My gold cornsnake is easily the coolest pet I've ever had. They're freaking cool animals. The look cool and move cool and watching them eat is both hilarious and terrifying. (2) His whole concept was so clever, I dunno, him folding out his venom teeth to fill a glass like a bar tap, enveloped in string after string of ammo belts (would he even be able to get to them to reload?), BARREL-RATTLE. (3) I almost always end up adoring the villain in kids' movies. Not that I don't like the protagonists, but with the villains, it tends to feel more like the writer/s letting loose and getting into all the nitty-gritty, darker places they can't let themselves get into with good guys.*

That's kinda what Rattlesnake Jake felt like to me--they got in their naughty jokes and some really good homages to the genre, but Jake was where they invested all their stylistic flair and real legendary badass killer business. No bluster or elaboration of the things he's done--he was the genuine, stare-down-the-barrel-of-your-gun-and-dare-you-to-shoot-cuz-he-can-SMELL-you're-a-poser article. He was like the more rugged Charlie Prince of Rango also a snake. Not ONLY that, but there's that edge of outlaw's honor to him--lol you actually did all this with one bullet, I respect that..--which made me all aflutter :3

* Actually I think Megamind was the first (Western) kid's movie I'd ever seen where there was any sort of ambiguity in the good guy--and mostly just because he got the bad guy label ^_^;;

And I totally 100% understand needing breaks from stuff you already need to do elsewhere. (S'why I haven't done fanart in mmmyearssomething XD) Hope your book draft is going well! If working on it is anything like me and various animation projects, it's just whetting the appetite and getting the fannish ideas percolating for when you can get back to that sort of thing >:3

I LOVE RAMBLES. <3

And I totally agree with all the points you make here, especially about Jake being the genuine article. Yeah, from the moment he shot that glass full of venom, I was head over heels, no saving me. *___* Good call with the Charlie Prince comparison! I remember when Jake showed up I was literally stunned. Like I said, the rest of the movie had been so (comparatively) light, then suddenly there was this grim shadow that fell over the proceedings. Jake is a straight-up mean character, but yes, he has that outlaw honor code, which is fantastic.

And I remember, because it was a Western kid's movie, I was convinced that Jake was going to get killed off at the end. I was actively dreading it. I was DREADING it, I tell you! When he thundered off into the desert at the end, I could have cheered! 8D

EXACTLY. I can't wait till this first draft is complete and my writing schedule is a little more relaxed. I miss writing fic all the time. There's no hope for me. XD
