Being reminded of Dickens is a good thing! I really want to stay true to that late-Victorian feeling, from the atmosphere to the etiquette. I hadn't consciously summoned Miss Havisham, but you're right on the money--- Mama Hume is a dead ringer! I have not read The Beetle-Hunter and I very much appreciate the link. Looking forward to reading it!
Although Ratigan never actually signals his thug within the story, I very much intended this to have been the scheme all along. I imagine he's been watching Basil for a few days, learning his route home, and then trusted his own skills of improvisation to get him to set aside his uniform long enough for it to be nicked. Once Basil was good and distracted, that was Joseph's cue to step in and suit up. It was definitely all a part of the master plan--- there's a reason they call him the Professor! :D
I've picked up some fighting lingo here and there (my characters seem to get into fights quite often, haha), but I researched some specific boxing terms to use for this piece, especially the body language that would precede certain punches. I had a lot of fun "choreographing" this fight scene, and I definitely wanted Basil to get in his share of hits!
What can I say? Basil just takes Ratigan's breath away. XD
As for Basil leaving the police force, that's a story for another day...
They are indeed quite a pair, and the fact that you love them just as much as I do puts a big smile on my face. Thanks so much for your fantastic feedback and encouragement--- I absolutely treasure every word of it. <333
