Well, anyone with half a brain could have predicted
this riot. I'd kind of forgotten all about the Orange march in Dublin today, but it all came back fairly quickly. My tutorial was good, if sparsely populated (tutor for this course seems a much nicer, agreeable sort than last years guy). I left and headed for the bus stop, which was looking a little more crowded than I might have expected. I waited for a while, and no buses came along which I thought was annoying, but hardly expected when it comes to Dublin Bus. When one did roll in, we all crowded on and set off - and all the way into town it kept passing every other stuff as we were full. We got as far as Dorset Street when an inspector intercepted the bus to tell the driver to continue straight on, as O'Connell Street was shut due to the "problems". A few moments later, a few members of the shiny-Nike-tracksuit-and-cheap-jewelery-from-Argos-brigade passed us by, draped in tricolours. You just knew it was a classy sort of protest then ;)
So, the bus diverted, and I eventually got off near a tram stop, to find the tram had been suspended also - so off I go to the suspension point and begin to make my way home. On the way I overhear talk of injuries, sledgehammer throwing, fire works, petrol bombs, car burnings, bomb threats, evacuations, trouble spreading to Aston Quay and Nassau Street, attempted looting/shop break-ins etc. - some of which may not be true, but all of it plausible. It's depressing to see this "special" people in action, who love their country so much they have no problem attacking it's police force, destroying peoples property, disrupting others lives and showing themselves to be nothing but idiotic, intolerant scumbags that should be forcibly sterilised for the good of society. Fáilte romhat go dtí Baile Átha Cliath, gach aon duine.
