Welcome to Radius!
I’ve worked in the field of employee benefits since 1999: first in human resources offices in both government and private industry; and then on the broker side focusing on small businesses. During that time, I’ve seen a clear need for better consumer education. That’s what this blog is all about: providing a resource for benefits information, using clear language that anyone - regardless of their level of expertise or experience - can read and understand.
Topics on the blog will include all aspects of employee benefits; while the focus will be primarily on health & welfare benefits, other topics such as total compensation and retirement benefits will occasionally be covered.
As of January 2022, the plan is a regular post every Tuesday morning; however, in the case of breaking news or similar situations, posts can also occur outside the normal schedule.
Ultimately, my aim for the blog is to provide insight into what’s going on in this field, offer general information and advice, and to highlight important things that consumers should know about their employment benefits. For the most part, posts will be about topics relevant to the United States, but I may occasionally mention other countries by way of providing a comparison or contrast.
The name of the blog, Radius, comes from the math term. While playing around with names for the blog, I came up with a visual image of the “clutter” of benefits advice already out there as a circle, with the radius line helping someone at the edge, or fringe (there’s a play on the term “fringe benefits” here), find exactly the answer they’re looking for. As a marketing concept, it’s so complicated as to be silly, so I’m sticking with the tried-and-true instead. But as a name, it’s unique enough to stand out while still being simple enough to remember.

About Me
My first name is Catherine, and I’m a fortysomething crazy Catholic lady, currently living and working in the metro Atlanta, Georgia, area, although I’m originally from eastern North Carolina. During business hours, I’m an employee benefits specialist; you can see a summary of my experience and qualifications at my
LinkedIn profile. After hours, I enjoy reading, writing, photography, spending time with my family, hiking, textile arts and traveling (not always in that order). I maintain a personal, non-benefits-related site at
Colling West and I’m looking forward to 2022 and all it has to bring - both here and elsewhere.
Again, thank you for visiting and I hope to see you back soon!
