A new terrorist threat
The southern and mostly rural areas of the Philippines have been, for quite sometime, havens for criminals and violent political movements. Communist separatists, pirates, and criminal gangs all call this area home.
However, a new threat is taking root in this area now. Islamic terrorism has been on the rise in Southeast Asia, and this traditionally lawless area of the Philippines provides a prime staging ground for these new terrorist organizations. The most prominent group in the area is the Moro Islamic Liberation Front militants.
That's right, this area of the Philippines now has to contend with the MILF militants.
