It's actually kinda funny that you mention Deinja, because, now that I think of it, I find him a more palatable character because he legitimately doesn't seem to be aware that anybody else has any opinions besides "well, if it's for the greater good, okay." Also, it could have been his internal dialogue way back at the beginning, but I'm of the opinion that if he thought that becoming magical goop was the only way he could benefit society, he wouldn't complain about getting rendered into fuel.
Like I said earlier: the first step towards redemption is regret (acknowleging that it's your fault and that you should not have done it, rather than just thinking "it shouldn't have happened, wah!") but one of the things that still pisses me off a bit about Charion is that he doesn't appear to be thinking of the girls as human beings yet - sure, he's acknowledged that he doesn't want his army buddy to die, but he's still treating the reason for his actions against Zaelem as just a reaction against Zaelem having something that he didn't. He hasn't yet acknowledged that Kismette can be with who she damn well wants, and that if the person she wants isn't him it's none of his damn business. He appears to have acknowledged that he's done things that have harmed Evelyn, but it still comes off a bit as "oh noes! My wife is hurt!" and it doesn't yet come off as if he would feel the same if, say, he and Evelyn hadn't been married.

Ah okay, you caught me there. Yea, that's the thing about Deinja; he wouldn't hesitate giving his life up as long as it benefits more than harms. Right now, he (rightly) believes that his brain does more good, haha.
Hahaha, let's take baby steps mmkay? :P I kinda thought that him regretting AND acknowledging Evelynn as his wife is like accepting Kismette's decision and moving on. :) C'mon, give that little guy a chance, hehe. *prod prod*

Deinja is, I think the type that ought to stick to the sciencing somewhere without a lot of distractions. Still, star studies are very useful.
