The guy walks in every Monday afternoon around 5:00 p.m., just when Jensen’s shift starts, and browses. He looks through different sections of the store each Monday and maybe Jensen notices him more than he should.
It’s because he stands out. Honest. He’s tall and lean, college-age (maybe a freshman or sophomore), has floppy hair that tends to fall into his eyes, and a mole near his nose. Oh, and dimples. Nobody can forget about those damn dimples. Jensen’s maybe had some inappropriate fantasies about those dimples. And honestly, if Jensen isn’t mistaken, he often catches a hint of something dark peeking out from the guy’s shirtsleeve, a tattoo of some sort, which also delves into the fantasy category.
Hot Guy, as Jensen tends to call him in his mind, never buys anything, so Jensen hasn’t had more than a half minute conversation with the guy every Monday about whether or not he needs any help. He always flushes absolutely adorably, so Jensen continues to ask even if he’s sure he knows the answer. It’s just too cute.
“Can I help you?” Jensen asks, walking next to the guy and shelving the new editions they just got in. Hot Guy starts a little and blushes, pink creeping from his neck to his cheeks, and Jensen wants to know just how far down the blush goes.
“No,” he says, “just browsing.”
“Okay,” Jensen replies easily, already moving away. He can’t stalk the guy or tear his clothes off, he could get fired, and he needs this job to pay for school. It’s a normal pattern. “Well, let me know if you do. The name’s Jensen.”
Jensen walks toward the back of the store, getting ready for some heavy duty shelving and boring monotonous work. While working at a comic book shop is fun because Jensen always gets the newest issues of his favorites first, it’s also annoying to have to shelve tons of things every Monday when their shipment comes in.
Groaning, he starts unpacking the boxes and loses track of time, caught in the repetitive actions and the occasional geeking out over something he’s been waiting for. Not really paying attention to what he’s doing, he stretches his arms over his head to the other side and then lifts the newest edition of A Plus X to the shelf that’s farther than Jensen really wants to walk right now - the benefits of elasticity, especially when one is being completely lazy. At least his abnormality is good for something.
“Hey, Jensen?” A voice comes from his right, starting out hesitant, but then going completely silent.
Shit. Shit, shit, shit!
Jensen totally forgot there was anyone else in the store with him. He had thought Hot Guy would have been long gone by now. Jensen turns toward him, a smile on his face, hoping that the guy totally didn’t just see Jensen’s arms clearly extending more than they should have been able to.
“Yeah, man, how can I help you?”
Hot Guy is staring at him slack-jawed with wonder. Well, there goes that theory.
___
Jared stares at Jensen, gaping at the sight he just saw. He rubs his fingers over his eyes like he just hallucinated Jensen’s arms reaching clear across the aisle, at least 10 feet more than most arms are able to. Jensen’s eyes start dimming with resignation, like Jared just murdered his prize-winning pet. He starts to speak again, probably wishing he had the ability to make people forget things.
The thing is, Jared knows people have abilities. Two percent of the population has been born with the mutated gene that lets them do all sorts of crazy things. Jared might have a trick of his own up his sleeve, but he’s never actually met anybody else that has The Gift, as other people call it.
Jared speaks up before Jensen can. He decides to say whatever he was going to before he became a mute who stares.
“I was wondering if maybe you wanna go grab some coffee or dinner after your shift?” Jared asks him hopefully.
“What?” Jensen says, his eyes widening a little like he can’t really believe what Jared’s asking. At least it’s not disgust marring his gorgeous face, just confusion.
“Dinner? Or coffee? I’m pretty flexible.” Jared repeats.
“You want to go out with me?”
“Umm, yes? Should I not want to go out with you?” Jared asks, hoping there isn’t a real reason he shouldn’t ask Jensen out, or that he’s been imagining the once-overs and lingering glances this whole time. The first day he came to the shop, he needed a gift for his friend Matt, but he’s been coming back for the hot comic book store guy since. If he’s been coming in for no reason, Jared’s not really going to be all that happy.
“No, no, I’d love to go out with you. But you still want to? Even after…that? And, man, I don’t even know your name!” Jensen exclaims.
Jared sticks out his hand for Jensen to shake. “Jared. And we all have our little quirks,” he says with a wink. “I just hadn’t actually met anyone with The Gift before.” Jared says, tries to explain his staring.
Jensen winces. “Oh, god, please don’t call it that. It makes me sound all powerful, which I’m really not.” He pauses. “Jared, huh?” Jensen shakes Jared’s hand, and a shudder runs through him at the contact. The grip is perfect, strong and capable. “Nice to officially meet you. And I would love to get coffee or dinner. Or both.”
Jared grins, loving the way his name rolls off Jensen’s tongue. He could get used to his name being used in a variety of contexts. He only wishes he had introduced himself much earlier.
“We can start with coffee,” Jared says, “what time are you done?”
Jensen looks down at his watch before he answers. “Now, actually.”
“Perfect. I love Jitters around the corner. We can head there?” Jared asks eagerly, hoping Jensen wants to start their date now rather than later. He’s always been a pretty impatient guy.
Jensen nods. “Gimme about five minutes to pack up and close?” Jensen asks. Little does he know that Jared would wait as long as it takes. It’s taken him long enough to gather the nerve to ask Jensen out. He’s definitely seeing this through. Jared idles by the door as Jensen goes through the ritual of cashing out, locking the back door, and shutting everything off. It’s kind of cute to see Jensen mumbling to himself as he completes each item in his mental list with a verbal check.
__
Jensen leads Jared out and locks the front door, pocketing his keys. His hands feel kind of clammy and he wipes them on his jeans surreptitiously. It’s 9:05 p.m. so it’s dark outside and the air has a bit of a chill. Jensen loves walking at this time of night - the light breeze ruffling his hair and cooling his heated cheeks. He can’t believe that he’s finally on a date with Hot Guy, Jared, after weeks of wondering. He’s glad someone got the courage to do something about it, even if it wasn’t him.
They start off heading in the direction of the coffee shop, making small talk on the way. They run into a little girl crying by a tree with her older sister or babysitter trying to comfort her.
“Kitty!” the girl is wailing over and over, looking up into the branches. Both Jared and Jensen stop and look up as well, seeing a cat stuck in the tree, mewing pitifully. Jensen doesn’t even think before stretching out his hand and bringing the cat safe and sound to the little girl.
The girl’s cries instantly quiet and the older teen looks at Jensen in shock. Oh crap. Tonight is definitely not Jensen’s night with his carelessness at using his ability.
“Thanks, Mister!” the little girl says while the teenager clenches the girl’s hand tightly. Jared reaches out and touches both their foreheads gently and both girls’ faces go lax for a second, eyes blanking.
What the hell?
“Your cat jumped down into my arms,” Jared says to the little girls, petting the fur of the cat purring in her arms. “I only had to reach a little.”
The girl grins brightly and hugs Jared’s legs before walking off with the other girl.
He looks over at Jared who has the grace to look a little guilty. “Umm, I might have an ability too,” he says and Jensen just stares. “I can make people forget minor things that happen. It’s not really helpful in major situations, not that I would even want to use it in something huge, but I have this ability to just make people think they imagined something or forget it even happened in the first place. It’s not dangerous, I asked some professionals, but yeah,” Jared says in a rush, trying to explain himself. He looks nervous as hell, like Jensen’s not going to want to go out with him or anything. It’s kind of charming, really.
This is the first time he’s met anyone with that screwed-up mutation inside them like Jared has, so he’s definitely not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. Jensen extends his arm just a little more than normal people can and places his hand over Jared’s rambling mouth. He feels warm huffs of breath against his palm and shivers a little.
“It’s okay. We can talk more about it over coffee?”
“You still want coffee?” Jared asks hopefully.
“Hell yes. We just found a whole new topic we have in common,” Jensen tells him and Jared laughs. God, even his grin is gorgeous. He leans in and kisses Jared - not caring that they’re in the middle of a sidewalk in front of everyone; he just wants that smile against his own. He steps closer and clutches Jared’s jacket, pulling him in and learning the shape of Jared’s mouth with his tongue.
Jared moans softly and damn, the noises coming from his mouth makes Jensen wish they weren’t in public. He pulls back and grins stupidly at Jared, leaning down to twine their fingers together and tugging gently in the direction of Jitters. He could use some coffee right now.
“Just a favor?” Jensen asks, a stray thought running through his mind.
“Hmm?” Jared asks, squeezing Jensen’s palm a little.
“Don’t use that power on me, okay? I don’t want to forget you or today or anything. Even if somehow, which I doubt, it goes bad.”
He says it as a joke, meant to lighten the situation, but he realizes how true it is.
“Oh believe me, not planning on it.” Jared replies without hesitation. They continue their trek towards the coffee shop quietly, but not uncomfortably. It’s going to be an epic date, Jensen can tell.
