Disclaimer: These gorgeous boys aren’t mine, no matter how much I wish they were. They belong to themselves and each other and this isn’t true, probably.
A/N: This is for
kiwiana who bought me for
help_haiti. She asked for high school/college AU? Lots of lovin' and schmoop, I adore ensemble casts and boys being awesome and flamingly gay in the face of homophobia. I do like seeing them get together. Hope this fits the bill! Thanks, as always, to
matalinolukaret for looking this over ♥
Working in a coffee shop isn’t the best job Jensen’s had, but then again he doesn’t have much to compare it to. He’s a junior in college and works at the campus coffee shop with two of his best friends, Danneel and Austin.
He does get all the coffee he wants, so that’s a perk. But he has some weird ass hours because they stay open till late for when students need that pick me up while they study in the library next door.
And, well, the staff at the library next door is also a big perk, especially one Jared Padalecki. Jared’s tall, well built, adorable with his dimples, bright smile, and shaggy hair, and completely and utterly taken by the fireball that is Sophia Bush. They always come in together, laughing with matching dimples and equally awesome smiles and Jensen’s heart clenches with want. Austin is head over heels in puppy love for Sophia and it sucks for them, but Jared and Sophia do make a pretty pair.
Sophia is pretty awesome too with her husky voice and twinkling eyes that are always full of mischief, Jensen can definitely see what Austin does. Danneel rolls her eyes at Jensen whenever he starts being all emo after Jared and Sophia leave to go back to their shift, but he can’t help it. She claims Sophia and Jared aren’t together but Jensen doesn’t think his eyes would deceive him that much.
Jared’s a freshman and he has the best laugh Jensen’s heard in his life. Jared laughs with his entire body and tells Jensen stories about idiot students in the library. He also tells Jensen lame jokes that make Jensen giggle helplessly because Jared’s laughing too. It’s hard to talk to him knowing that nothing’s gonna happen, but Jared’s become a good friend, one Jensen can’t imagine being at work without.
Then Jared comes in one day, Aldis tagging along behind him. Aldis is a pretty cool dude too, all interested and technology and Jensen has no idea what he says half the time. Danneel is infatuated with him and she understands everything he says because she’s interested in it too, the nerd. But Jensen really wouldn’t want her any other way.
“So Jensen!” Jared claims over the clamor that is the coffee shop after classes let out.
“Hey Jared,” Jensen says, smiling brightly.
“Some of these students drive me insane,” Jared starts when he’s finally at the front of the line. “I had one girl today asking me about the red book she was looking at earlier. The red book! In a college library where there are about 8,562 red books!”
Jensen laughs because that’s just typical.
“Well we had some guy in here that tried to impress his girlfriend and just ordered espresso. Pure espresso. You should have seen his face when I gave him the tiny cup filled with it. He took one sip hesitantly and spit it back out claiming it was stronger than he was used to. Jerk.”
Jared laughs; one of his belly laughs, and all Jensen can do is watch in rapt fascination. Damn, Jared is gorgeous.
“Hey Jensen,” Aldis pipes up from behind Jared and Jensen flushes a little, shaking his head from Jared thoughts. Jensen didn’t realize he had turned into a thirteen-year-old girl with her first big crush. Damn he is so gone for the guy.
“Hey Aldis! How are you doing? Your normal?”
Aldis nods and Jensen calls out his order to Danneel specifically who blushes and narrows her eyes at him. He smiles innocently and she rolls her eyes because she knows that Jensen is anything but innocent.
Jared motions a table and Jensen nods at him and watches as they walk away. The next person in line starts saying their order and Jensen gets back in the groove of taking orders and payments and making the coffee. He nudges Danneel towards Aldis and Jared’s table and she whispers angrily to make Austin to do it, but he puts both hands on her back and pushes her from behind the various machines.
“I hate you Jensen Ackles,” she moans and Jensen winks at her.
“All lies sweetheart.”
She takes their coffee over and Jensen takes a moment to watch, thankful the line has lessened considerably. Austin can handle it now. Danneel is standing there and blushing as she’s talking to Aldis but Jensen can see the smile on her face. He sees her blush even deeper and then nod slowly and Jensen smiles wider. It seems Aldis finally got the courage to ask the girl out. His eyes catch Jared’s and he sees that Jared’s eyes are on him. It’s Jensen’s turn to flush and he turns away, busying himself with cleaning the machine.
Danneel comes back, a radiant smile on her face and Jensen nudges her hip.
“Hot date tonight?”
“Shut up. No, tomorrow.”
Jensen laughs and Danneel laughs as well, unable to help it.
A few days (and dates) later, Aldis comes in and Danneel takes her break at the same time, grabbing Aldis’ regular order with her. Jensen smiles to himself, thankful that both of them finally got their act together. Danneel’s never been happier and neither has Aldis. They’re a good match and look devastatingly beautiful together.
After their breaks are over and Danneel comes back behind the counter, she nudges Jensen’s hip.
“What’s up Danni?”
“Well, I just found out some very interesting information so to preempt, I told you so!” she crows. Jensen’s confused about what Danneel’s talking about.
“Huh?”
“Well, I was talking to Aldis and the topic of Jared came up and Aldis was telling me that he’s single and bisexual which means you have a shot Jennybean!”
“Don’t call me that,” Jensen mutters absently and then the rest of what Danneel said catches up to him. He whips around to face her, “are you serious? What about Sophia?”
“Best friends, nothing more.”
“No way?”
“Yes way. See, I told you Jensen that they weren’t together but you didn’t want to listen to me did you?”
“Fine, all hail Danneel. I’m sorry I ever doubted you, happy?”
“Quite.”
“But, even if he is bisexual and single, what makes you think he would even consider going out with me?”
Danneel’s quiet at that admission.
“Jensen? How will you know if you don’t try?”
And that pretty much hits his worst fear right there. If Jared says no, Jensen doesn’t know what he’s going to do. Jensen’s pretty much fallen in love with the kid and Jensen’s going to be completely heartbroken if Jared refuses. But that will be nothing if Jensen just goes on not knowing.
He squares his shoulders, takes a deep breath and starts walking toward the door.
“I’m going on my break Danni.”
“Go get him tiger!” Danneel calls after him and Jensen shakes his head in amusement. At lease he’ll always have Danneel to make him feel better about life.
Jensen opens the door to the library and then stops. He actually has no idea what part of the library Jared works in. He should have thought out his plan first. He sees Sophia right then, thankfully, and walks toward her. She grins bright when she catches sight of him and Jensen thinks about how perfect she would be for Austin.
“Hey Jensen!” Sophia says.
“Hey! How are you?”
“Good, finishing up my shift. You lookin’ for Jared?” Sophia says knowingly. Jensen feels his cheeks heat up.
“Am I that obvious?” Jensen asks her, afraid of the answer.
“Only to me. He’s on the second floor restocking books.”
“Thanks Sophia,” Jensen says heading towards the stairs.
“No problem. Oh, and hey Jensen?” Jensen turns around at that.
“Behave up there. It’s a library,” she says, eyes twinkling. Jensen chooses to ignore that comment and goes up the stairs, steeling himself for any reaction he might get.
He walks around and finally sees Jared reaching up to shelve the books. His shirt rises a little and Jensen catches a hint of well-defined abs and tan skin.
“Jared,” Jensen calls out to him. Jared stops what he’s doing and turns around and that huge megawatt grin that Jensen’s in love with appears on his face. Jensen feels hope bubble in his chest because he hasn’t seen that grin given to many.
“Hey Jensen! I didn’t think you’d ever drop by,” Jared says, eyes shining with laughter.
“Maybe I finally found a reason to come by,” Jensen says and Jared smiles.
“What would that be?”
“Jared,” Jensen starts, taking a deep breath, “wouldyoumaybewannagrabdinnertonight?”
Jared stares at him and Jensen huffs out a breath.
“Would you maybe wanna grab dinner tonight?” Jensen repeats, slower this time. “With me,” he clarifies.
There’s a silence and Jared’s walking towards him and Jensen really hopes it isn’t to punch him in the face or something. They’re a breath away from each other and Jensen just has to move an inch to be touching Jared.
“Thought you’d never ask. I’d love to,” Jared says before tipping his head down and capturing Jensen’s lips in the sweetest and most chaste kiss he’s ever had. It’s pretty much perfect.
The back away from each other and Jared has that gorgeous smile again and Jensen can’t resist reaching in and kissing Jared again. Luckily, he won’t have to resist anymore.
“Why didn’t you ask me?” Jensen says once he’s pulled away again.
“I didn’t know if you actually wanted to. And I was nowhere near brave enough to ask and then be rejected. Plus, I’ve kinda become addicted to caffeine because of you. Thanks for that,” Jared says, blushing so prettily at the admission.
Jensen smiles so wide his cheeks hurt. But he got what wanted and Jensen doesn’t think the smile is ever going to be wiped off his face.
