Jared has a pretty cushy job for being a student worker on campus if he does say so himself. He works in the College of Education (which works out for him since he wants to be a teacher) as one of the assistants to the secretaries in the department. All of the faculty members know him, and although he seriously wants to strangle some idiotic people sometimes, the connections he makes are worth it. He spends most of his days goofing off on the internet or studying with the only really busy hours when students come in to see the advisors or when panicked parents call about their students. He knows who all the professors are, gets in all the right classes, and it helps to network if he needs reference letters later or anything else he might need. Plus, the gossip from the ladies in the office make the days go by so much faster.
It is 10 AM on the first day of school and there’s been a steady stream of lost students because their classes had been switched or they forgot their schedules or something or the other. It’s been quiet for a while, though, since classes are going on and Jared is filling out the crossword puzzle in the campus newspaper. It’s Monday so it’s the easiest crossword of the week and as he fills in ‘aria’ for Opera solo, the door opens and what has to be the hottest guy Jared has ever seen in his life stands there, eyes wandering about, like he isn’t quite sure he is in the right place.
“Can I help you?” Jared asks when he finally gets his tongue that seems to have stuck to the roof of his mouth. The guy’s eyes snap to his and Jared has to swallow at the intense green gaze.
“This is going to sound really stupid, especially because I’m a freaking senior, but I went to my class this morning and I thought it was the right room with Dr. Gamble. But I sat through the class even though it wasn’t Dr. Gamble because I assumed the professors had been switched or whatever until class ended and the professor said something about the elementary schools and I finally realized that I was actually in the elementary section when I was supposed to be in the middle school one? And I had kept getting stares and stuff during the class period but I didn’t know what they meant and now I feel like such an idiot because I should have double checked my schedule but I swear that I went to the right room. Plus…” Jared cut the guy off before he could keep on babbling, even if Jared did think that this guy in front of him was probably the most adorable thing ever and could give Jared a run for his money for acting like a total spaz.
“Hey man, it’s cool. Why don’t you come around and check your schedule, so we can make sure you were in the right room?” Jared tells the guy and his shoulders drop in relief. Jared feels pretty good about himself for making some of the tension disappear. Jared gets up and lets the guy sit at his desk after he’s logged out of his own account. The guy sits in his chair and starts typing and Jared can’t help but grin at the adorable wrinkle in the guy’s brow as he furrows his eyebrows in concentration. He brings up his schedule and points the particular class out to Jared and Jared takes a quick glance at the name at the top of the schedule before looking at the spot he’s pointing at. Jensen. It’s a different name, one Jared has only heard of as a last name, but Jared enjoys the way it feels on his tongue.
Jared leans over Jensen to look at the screen and he can smell Jensen, the spicy cologne mixed with musk and a little sweat and it’s kind of intoxicating. Jared has to fight the blush from his cheeks before he does something stupid like kiss Jensen.
Jared looks over at Jensen and tilts his head toward the screen.
“Mind if I check something?” he asks, wanting to check the room schedules, anything he can to help the guy out. And if he leans just a little closer to catch another scent, it’s not as though anybody could blame him.
Jensen nods and Jared pulls away so Jensen can get up because he’s been shifting in his chair as if he’s uncomfortable and Jared feels like an ass for being all up in Jensen’s space since the guy has no idea that Jared doesn’t know what the concept of personal space means. Jared sits back down after the guy moves away, ignoring the clench in the pit of his belly, and looks at the room schedules. They don’t seem to match up to Jensen’s schedule at all and Jared figures the schedule hasn’t been updated or he’s looking at the wrong site or something because it doesn’t make sense to Jared.
“Sorry man, it says you should be there but I don’t know what happened. You might wanna just e-mail Dr. Gamble or call her and ask her what’s going on because I have no idea,” Jared tells Jensen, shrugging his shoulders a little. “Or you can leave a note, and I can put it in her box if you want?”
Jensen sighs deeply and Jared wishes he could do some other thing to make that frown go away because while it is kind of cute, it also makes Jared want to do whatever is in his power to make Jensen smile. Jared bets Jensen’s smile is radiant and he wishes he could have a chance to see it.
Jensen gives him a small grateful smile, “Thanks dude, I’m sure I’ll figure it out. I hope. I’ll just e-mail her and it’s probably my fault anyway.” He shrugs his shoulders sheepishly and Jared nods and just smiles, not trusting himself to speak and do something idiotic like call out to Jensen and ask him out on a date or for a quick fuck or him to marry him or some other stupid thing that would embarrass the hell out of the both of them. Jensen turns to walk towards the door and then looks over his shoulder right before he opens the door and lifts up his hand in a little wave before turning back around and going out of the office.
Jared is so screwed.

Three days later and Jared can’t get Jensen out of his mind. He’s haunting Jared’s dreams, day and night. The freckles, the intense green eyes, the spiked hair, the full lips, and the freakin’ bowlegs that he had noticed as Jensen was walking out. He’s fallen head over heels in lust for a guy who doesn’t even know his name!
Wednesday is one of Jared’s longest days because he has work in the morning and then classes all day, plus a damn night class. It’s one of his Education ones and he hopes it’s not going to go on forever tonight because it’s been a long day and Jared just wants to fall into bed and go to sleep. He dealt with snippy professors at work, with students whose schedules were still screwed up, had a quiz in his Statistics class already, and then had his laptop suddenly die on him.
Jared finds a seat next to someone who looks vaguely familiar and he realizes they were actually in the same class freshman year. They talk a little bit about what field they’re concentrating on and how their summer was and if Jared didn’t already have a mega crush on a certain someone, he’s sure he would fall for this girl. She’s gorgeous with red hair and light brown eyes that glisten with mischief and happiness. Her personality comes off as standoffish at first, but Jared quickly realizes it’s just her sharp wit and sarcasm, which Jared can appreciate and so they really hit it off.
Their professor comes in at that moment and introduces himself as Dr. Kripke. Jared’s heard a couple of things about him, sorted his mail even, but he’s never actually met the guy. Dr. Kripke is kind of short and balding, but he’s bouncing around excitedly with a book in his hand and talks about how much fun they’re going to have this semester and Danneel nudges him with a grin that Jared can’t help but return. In the midst of all this someone passes by in front of him to sit in the empty seat next to him and Dr. Kripke stops his spiel about what they’re planning for the semester.
“How nice of you to join us Mr. Ackles,” Dr. Kripke says, but there’s warmth in his voice. Jared turns to look at the guy who is sitting next to him and his mouth almost drops open in shock because it’s Jensen. His Jensen. The one he’s been hoping to catch a glimpse of on the sprawling campus. Jared can’t believe he didn’t notice his last name or that they had the same class. Jensen blushes a little, making those adorable freckles stand out even more, but he sends Dr. Kripke a grin that’s full of familiarity and affection.
“Had to make a grand entrance Dr. Kripke,” he says smoothly and Jared feels a hot swoop in his belly - like he just fell a little more for Jensen at the humor in his voice and that smile.
Jensen drops down in his seat heavily and Jared tries not to flail spastically but his crush is sitting right next to him! Jared really hopes that Jensen is more than just a pretty face because he genuinely seems like an awesome person and Jared wants to get to know who Jensen is. Jensen digs through his bag for his notebook and Jared glances over and sees a worn copy of The Great Gatsby that looks as though its been read many times and it is one of Jared’s favorites. Jared decides right then that he’s going to find a way for Jensen to become his boyfriend. One way or another.
Jensen finally pulls out the black spiral notebook and his pen and listens intently to what Dr. Kripke is saying and Jared totally forgot he was actually in class and focuses on his syllabus and Dr. Kripke instead of the extremely gorgeous boy next to him. The next time he chances a glance in Jensen’s direction though, he sees a small smirk playing about his lips and little crinkles next to his eyes and Jared can tell that Jensen’s highly amused and Jared feels like he wants to be swallowed whole while at the same time like he just had 100 pounds of candy handed to him. Because that means Jensen’s been looking as well, and noticed Jared too. Maybe this won’t be as hard as Jared had thought. And from the appreciative sideways glances Jared’s getting, Operation: Make Jensen Ackles Jared’s Boyfriend may hopefully go into effect that night.
