Jensen was a geek. He knew he was. He had the thick glasses, the frumpy looking clothes, was in all honors classes, and got all A’s. He was a walking cliché, pretty much. And along with all that, he was in love with a jock. And not just any jock, but Jared Padalecki, quarterback of his high school football team, childhood best friend, and neighbor. And Jared? Jared was the boyfriend of Alexis who was the captain of the cheerleading squad, Jensen’s childhood nemesis, and class slut. Not that Jared really paid attention to that. He still thought of Jensen as one of his closest friends and didn’t see him as anything more.
Jensen saw Jared through their windows that faced each other’s rooms. Jared was pacing, waving frantically, and trying to explain something on the phone. Jensen bet it was Alexis. Jared wasn’t usually so agitated with other people. Jensen glanced up from the book he was reading for English and watched Jared walk around the room.
It was probably over what Jared had said at lunch today. He was teasing her about her hair or something stupid and she had taken it to the extreme and stormed off. Jared teased Jensen all the time about his glasses and clothes, and Jensen would just snap right back at him, mocking the football and the parties and other random crap. He and Jared had always got each other. Their relationship was based on laughs and teasing the hell out of each other. Had been since they were little kids - when Jared accidently knocked Jensen over the head with his football that he threw over the fence.
Jared finally hung up the phone with a frown on his face and Jensen tried to catch Jared’s eyes. He wrote You OK? on his sketch pad, their system of communicating. They had been grounded one day when they were thirteen or fourteen and couldn’t use phones or go over to each other’s houses. So Jensen got the idea of them using the notebooks they both had, left over from their drawing days. Jared had been all for that and thus their new way of talking to each other was developed.
Jared smiled at him, the fond grin that Jensen adored and jotted tired of drama on it with a ‘what can you do’ sort of smile. The smile that shouldn’t ever be on Jared’s face. Jensen wrote Sorry :( and sent Jared a sympathetic grin who just shrugged in response. Jensen wrote down I love you and looked up but Jared had closed his curtains and Jensen held up the pad, gazing wistfully at the words and his own reflection in the window.
Jensen heard Taylor Swift’s song come on the radio and started to sing along (and if that wasn’t gay enough…) with his brush in hand as he danced all over the room, bopping his heads idiotically and basically being the huge dork that he was. The song was eerily perfect for his own situation with Jared.
But she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts
She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming bout the day when you'll wake up and find
That what you're lookin for has been here the whole time
If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along so why can't you see?
You belong with me
You belong with me
He danced all across his room, pulling out his preppy sweater, his all black emo clothes, his sports jerseys, but nothing was him. Nothing said Jensen but the ill-fitting pants and t-shirts that hung on his lean frame. Jensen missed Jared peeking his head from his curtain and laughing as Jensen danced around, singing into his pretend microphone. He missed that gorgeous grin that was aimed at him, and the shake of the tousled head that Jensen wanted to run his fingers through.
Jensen went to sleep with thoughts of Jared, like he did every night. He got up the next day and sat on the bench that was in front of the fence separating Jared and Jensen’s house and designated as the bus stop to go to their high school. Jared walked out of his house in jeans that were so old that they fit in all the right places with a button down shirt that fitted him perfectly, highlighting the muscles in his arms and chest and back. Jared dropped down next to him and Jensen could smell that spicy cologne that Jared had been wearing since he hit puberty. Jensen could probably know where Jared was in a crowd with a blindfold on.
Jared started talking a mile a minute about the most random things, but Jensen wasn’t even listening. He was busy gazing at that smile that Jensen had missed since Alexis came in the picture. The smile that was big and bright and beautiful. But then Jensen heard the roar of an engine and he glanced to the side to see Alexis pull up in her bright red Corvette. Alexis sneered at him and Jared stopped talking mid-sentence as his smile dimmed a little bit and he got up and hopped into the car, shooting Jensen an apologetic half wave and smile.
Jensen raised his hand up because he could never stay mad at Jared, since they had met and the ball hit him. That was probably the only time he got really upset and that’s because he didn’t know the guy. Jared is Jared. A gigantic puppy filled with a lot of flailing and hugging and general ruckus. It’s impossible to be annoyed for too long.
As soon as Jared’s properly seated though, Alexis pulled him in for a deep kiss that Jensen couldn’t look away from because it was like a train wreck. She held him close and looked at Jensen under her eyelashes, grinning like she won something. Which she did. She won Jared. Jensen rolled his eyes and glanced away as Alexis pushed Jared away and drove off, leaving Jensen in the car’s wake. Just like always.
Jensen and Jared were walking through the halls to class from their lockers after lunch. Jensen glanced around and saw Alexis leaning in and talking to some random dude from the football team. The same dude that Jared played with, for goodness sake. Jensen shook his head in disgust and snorted and Jared glanced over at him, eyebrow raised in question. As much as he wanted Jared and Alexis to break up, he didn’t want Jared to find out like this and so he just shrugged his shoulders. But apparently Jared could read minds or was more attuned than Jensen thought because he followed where Jensen’s eyes were a minute ago and saw Alexis whispering and giggling.
Jared stalked over to where they were and tried to demand and explanation but Alexis just huffed and rolled her eyes, pushing Jared away and walking away without even saying anything. Jared’s shoulders drooped and he walked towards his class, not meeting Jensen’s eyes or waiting for him.
Jensen didn’t have any classes with Jared for the rest of the day and the dance was that night as well. He knew Jared had to go home and get ready. Because even if he was torn up over the Alexis thing, he was a good guy and wouldn’t let her down. So Jensen went home and started to study, ignoring the clenching in his belly and the need to glance up every few seconds to see if he could spot Jared.
Jensen finally looked over into Jared’s room and saw Jared all dressed up and combing his hair. He was wearing a vest and a nice shirt and dress slacks, and a bowtie. The only thing missing was the suit jacket and Jensen couldn’t breathe for a few seconds at how hot Jared looked in that ensemble. Jared picked up the sketchpad and held it up for Jensen to see. You going tonight?
Jensen picked up his own and even though he wanted to go, there was no point. No, studying
Jared wrote something else down and held up the pad again wish you were! and he pouted a little. Jensen laughed at that adorable little pout and Jared got up, picking up his suit jacket and walking out of his bedroom door. Jensen glanced down at the sheet of paper amid all of his schoolbooks, I love you, and he made a decision that he hoped he wouldn’t regret.
He walked into the dance, shaking a little from the nerves, and itching from how uncomfortable the stupid suit was. He had traded out his glasses for contacts that he didn’t wear much because they itched but luckily, they were behaving tonight. He had done something to his hair so it looked halfway decent and his clothes actually fit him.
The crowd parted for him as he went inside and Jensen shook a little more from everyone’s gaze on him. He only had his eyes for one person though and saw Jared a few feet away talking to Chad, one of his other friends. He stopped as soon as he saw Jensen though and his mouth dropped just a little. A shy grin grew on his face and Jensen felt his own mouth mirroring that smile. Jared bypassed a couple of people dancing, eyes only on Jensen. Jensen felt a shiver of want go through him, and a tinge of hope. He hoped he wasn’t imagining any of this, because it would be the worst heartbreak in the world.
Before Jared could get to him, though, Alexis stepped between them and tried to press herself against Jared. Jared just pushed her away, not even listening, his eyes still locked on Jensen. Jensen blushed and then widened his eyes at the incredulous look she shot both him and Jared but he couldn’t care much with Jared coming closer and closer.
Jared was finally in front of him and Jensen took a deep breath before unfolding the sheet of paper he had clenched in his hand that he had been staring at earlier and held it up in front of Jared; I love you. Jared smiled and reached into his pocket, pulling out his own folded sheet of paper. Jensen held his breath, unable to believe this was happening and hoping that sheet said the same thing. Jared unfolded it and held it up in front of him I love you. Jensen grinned shyly at him and Jared’s grin was brighter than Jensen had ever seen it. Jared bit his lip before leaning down and pulling Jensen into the softest, yet hottest kiss of Jensen’s life. They kissed for long moments before Jensen heard claps around them and he blushed the hardest he’d ever blushed and pulled back a little. Jared was still gazing at him in awe and Jensen couldn’t even care about the audience.
“You belong with me,” he whispered before leaning up to kiss Jared again.
