Those of you who have been long-time followers of my journal know that the one thing I always pride myself on is my open mind. I try to accept other peoples' opinions, even when I don't agree with them, and spirited debate is always encouraged here. But something happened tonight that I really can't let slide.
On another community here on LiveJournal, a discussion was raised about a certain phrase that someone in the public eye used to tell someone to "spit it out already." The majority of commentors on the post in question didn't find it offensive, but there were 3 or 4 commentors that did, and did not hesitate to voice their opinions.
The only trouble with this, though, is that they proceeded to argue with the people who didn't find it offensive about why they were wrong. There was a reply to me that wondered how I got "You must find this offensive!" from them saying that they were not required to like it. What I said was that the person I had replied to was not required to like how the person stated "spit it out already," but there was no reason to try and change the rest of the commentors' minds about why we DIDN'T find it offensive.
I'm not antifeminist at all. I am, in fact, a woman, and I do believe that there are certain things that should not be said because they are offensive to women (see: the c-word). HOWEVER, I didn't find this phrase offensive, and it apparently boggled this poor person's brain, and the brains of the other few commentors who WERE offended. They simply cannot understand how we didn't find the phrase offensive, and accusations of "stanning" were thrown around.
Look assholes. We're not stanning. We just understand that not everything in the world can be PC, and we ACCEPT that not everything in the world can be PC. It's not our fault that you find it offensive, and hey, we're cool with you finding it offensive. We just don't. It doesn't faze us. We understand that the person in question just talks that way, and has NEVER been PC, and the field they operate in has never been PC, and we can't change that.
To summarize: FUCK THE FUCK OFF AND STOP TRYING TO SHOVE YOUR BELIEFS DOWN OUR THROATS. WE'RE NOT DOING IT TO YOU, SO DON'T DO IT TO US. THERE'S SUCH A THING AS FREE WILL, YOU KNOW, AND THAT MEANS WE'RE ALLOWED TO DISAGREE WITH YOU.
tl;dr: Some people can't get that other people disagree with them. I'm sick, so this pisses me off more than it usually would. I bitched.
