Melody's 10 Favourite Movies (today)

I love making lists, and I am in a list-making/ writing mood.

Here are my top favourite movies of right now. Most of which are horror-y/ spooky, animated, werewolf related, or directed by John Landis. To honest, I don't watch very many movies anymore because I am too busy working on them (hahahaha). These are some of the ones that have touched my life. The way I grade films is whether or not I enjoyed them. I am not a film snob. I detest those people.

In No Particular Order:

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937).
I saw this movie when it was reissued in theaters before the big VHS release. It was terrifying. I fell instantly in love with it. There is just so understated, pure and captivating about this story. I know that people love to disparage Snow White as being passive or meek, and that's just not an accurate assessment. The quiet, powerful gentleness that exists in her is remarkable; her capacity for forgiveness and believing that people are good, especially after all of those years of abuse, has always really stayed with me.

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949).
What a true cinematic gem this is. Two literary characters paired together because of their mutual propensity for chaos makes one of the most enjoyable movie-watching experiences of all time (for me, anyway). The court room scene is the greatest in all of cinema history.

Jaws (1975).
One of the biggest loves of my life is marine biology. Before I decided to do what I was going to do with my life, this was a strong contender. I absolutely love the ocean and all of its creatures, especially sharks, and I feel as though this movie is why. I remember very specifically that the sharks from The Little Mermaid scared me, but Jaws did not. It's just such a perfect film. I will say that the time at sea goes on perhaps a little bit too long (mostly because men talking about nothing is always yawn-worthy). The John Williams' score is what made me want to become a film composer.

Burke and Hare (2010).
This movie is SO FUNNY. It's VERY BLACK comedy, but it's so outrageously funny. Some of it is very gruesome and too much at times, but scenes such as in the kirkyard where Greyfriars Bobby narcs on the protagonists is one of the funniest things I have ever seen, and you're never going to be able to change my mind.

Coming to America (1988).
I cannot convey to you how MUCH I love John Landis and his sense of honour. I am NOT the romantic comedy type of person, and the fact that this is a romantic comedy does not effect my enjoyment of it whatsoever.

An American Werewolf in London (1981).
Another magical John Landis gem. He really is my favourite director, after maybe Spielberg. Truthfully, There are very many werewolf movies, though not as many as other genres, and almost none of them are good. This is passable as a good werewolf film. One of the best things about Landis films is that they are always immaculately cast. The other thing is that, no matter what the subject matter, they are funny. And, oh my GOD, are they FUNNY.

The Company of Wolves (1984).
I have written at length about how profound an effect this movie has had on me (after remembering I can seen it as a kid left unsupervised when I absolutely should not have been or been allowed to see it). I wish more people have seen this so that I can talk about how much I love it with someone who understands.

It's a Wonderful Life (1946).
I haven't seen this movie in almost 5 years. I will probably never watch it again, because the last time I watched it, I was alone on Christmas Eve crying my face off because it wasn't such a wonderful life. It will always hold a very special place in my heart.

Singin' in the Rain (1952).
The Perfect Film. The End.

Cats Don't Dance (1997).
I wore out 2 vhs copies of this film and it was banned in my house for over a decade. That's all I will say about this. :)

Honourable Mentions:
Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, Brother Bear, The Three Caballeros, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Mary Poppins, Flight of the Navigator, Short Circuit (I named my dog after Johnny 5), Beetlejuice, Big Fish, Labyrinth, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Coco, Charlotte's Web (original), ¡Ay, Jalisco, no te rajes!, etc.

You get the idea! :)
