Peter climbed the stairs, his son was draped over his shoulder quietly snoring. As he reached the top step, El stepped out of Neal’s bedroom holding the little boys favorite pair of pajamas.
She followed as Peter headed towards the bathroom. Reaching his destination, Peter gently set the still sleeping child down on the vanity countertop. He held the boy upright while El grabbed a damp washcloth and towel.
“Did you boys have fun today at the fair?”
Peter nodded yes. “Neal loved every minute of it. He couldn’t get enough of the petting zoo and the pony rides. I think by the end of the day he managed to feed and pet all the different animals and rode one of the ponies named Flower at least five times.”
El laughed as she looked at her filthy son. He had dirt on his face and hands, his clothes were sticky with mustard and powdered sugar. She looked over at Peter. “Let me guess, hot dogs and funnel cakes?”
Peter gave her a lopsided grin. “Of course, best food to eat at the fair.”
She helped as her husband peeled the messy t-shirt off their little man. She took the warm rag and started cleaning Neal up. Peter glanced over and said, “Be careful, he wants to show off his new tattoo to his two uncles tomorrow.”
There was a small fire-breathing dragon on Neal’s upper arm. El looked at the delicately painted image and smiled. “I’ll be careful, I’m sure Mozzie and Neal will be impressed.”
Between the two Burkes they cleaned up little Neal and got him dressed in his dragon-print jammies. Peter hoisted his still sleeping son up and carried him into the bedroom and laid him on the bed. El tucked the blankets around Neal and gave him a peck on the cheek.
Neal stirred and mumbled, “Night Mommy, night Daddy.”
Peter leaned over and gave his son a kiss on his forehead. “We love you, sweet dreams buddy.”
