Alright, to save time, if you see "D Sizzle" in a description for a record it means it was purchased from one Danial Sant. I bought about 25 records from the dude for $250.
Amenity "Breathe" (Scorch) I know saying this record is your favorite Amenity record is like saying "Salad Days" is your favorite Minor Threat song, but man, after listening to this for the first time in too long, I can't deny that this gets me off more than any other Amenity material. I really wish this era could have produced an LP, but what can you do? Seriously finds a perfect medium between "I Against I" inspired "groove" riffs and that late 80's/early 90's SoCal jockey sxe style and a pinch of what would be "that early 90's San Diego sound." Oh yeah, and Tim, there's a very very fine line beteen the outro to "Still" and the intro to "Riot Squad." Just sayin'. D Sizzle.
Breakdown "Hangin' At WRSU" (Special Forces) I'm not gonna lie, everytime I saw this on someone's list I figured (hoped) it was like, a bunch of unreleased songs from an '88 radio show or something. Instead this is the '97 lineup, but y'know, since the a-side of "Blacklisted" rules about as hard as the '87 demo, I guess it doesn't really matter that much. The live recording on here's a little flat compared to the 2nd side of "Blacklisted," but it's still Breakdown, so it still rules. D Sizzle.
Buried Alive "Six Month Face" (Victory) I haven't heard this yet, but I did listen to a tape of "Death of Your Perfect World" yesterday and man does that record hold up. A seriously fucking GREAT slice of 90's moshy hardcore. D Sizzle.
Confront "Payday" (Dutch East India) Replacing a copy I traded. This has got to be one of my top 10 favorite hardcore records of this style/era. If the comp songs were included on this and it came out in '88 or '89 (where for some reason I assume it was recorded) these guys would be worshipped way harder than Judge. D Siz
Crunch Time "The Realness" (Lockin' Out, green) Lost this in a trade awhile back, and for some reason felt kind of uneasy about it, even though if you played any of these songs ina lineup I wouldn't be able to pick 'em out. I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel a lot better having this back, or that I'll listen to it more than twice in the next year. Don't question it...D Siz.
Death Token "Walking Dead Life" (Backwards Making) Absolutely killer. I wasn't too floored with the first 7", and like a lot of people, I played it a few times and filed it, but this new single is probably the strongest contender for best of '05 I've heard this year. One side is a fast and short hardcore song that brings to mind Bastard because of the occasional straight-from-the-diaphram vocals and really deep bass. The flip is a killer slow hardcore song, not a post-HHIG TRUDGING METALLIC BRUTAL DIRGE, but a slow hardcore song, the kind that would fit well on a mixtape with Middle Class's "Situations," Jerrys Kids' "Lost" or NA's "Evacuate." Bands really don't write songs like this anymore, which is a shame, 'caue I've always had a thing for the hardcore slow jam. The Joy Division sounding bass sound and vocalless Misfits-esque bridge make this song, and the ambient "piece" at the end gives it a nice flavor. 1000% recomended for ever human being on earth, no questions asked.
Death Token "Funeral Music For K-Town Hardcore" (Spild Af, green sleeve) I wasn't impressed with this the first time around, but after hearing the new single, their whole sound makes a lot more sense to me. For some reason Devoid of Faith and Drop Dead come to mind when I play this record, but that's probably just because it sounds a lot like an American band inspired by fast Japanese hardcore. The Siege/Accused influenced vocals and tight start/stops in the songs set this above most records of this style. There's nothing signature "k-town" about the music on here, but who cares, it's a fast hardcore I can actually listen to all the way through, which is rare, so these guys must be doing something right. Thanx Piggot.
Gehenna "Birth of Vengeance" (w/ red one sided sheet cover and lyrics printed on vellum paper) San Diego classick revisits my collection for the 2nd time. Yes, this is my 3rd time owning this. One day I'm just gonna put my foot down and say "no I will NOT trade this record." Then again it might be fun to see just how many times I can trade this and get another copy...D Siz
Hard Stance "Face Reality" (Workshed, clear) Fuck, I love this record. Totally sloppy and hard socal edge stuff. I've been looking for a Workshed copy for awhile, so it's nice to get it finally. D Siz.
Ray and Porcell "s/t" (Revelation) Another notch in the Don Fury belt.
Release "No Longer" (Inner Journey) I was kind of hoping this was the "Pain Inside" ep, 'cause I have a thing for sxe record with tagging on the cover (any Battered Citizens fans in the house?), but from a few listens this isn't too shabby. Still looking for that first one though, if anyone has it handy. Traded to my man Ben Smartnick for a Confront 7".
Roswell Project "Maggots and Fies = You" (Bacteria Sour, file version, mustard yellow outer sleeve, white marble vinyl) Yo Koller, what up? Finally tracked down a "fancy version," and man, the hype about he packaging on this jam is well deserved. Mind numbing. D Siz.
Sparkmarker "Atomos" (No Idea) D-d-d-don Fury jam. D Siz.
Turning Point/No Escape (Temperance) Man, if any of those mtv2 level mainstreamo bands covered these Turning Point songs they'd have a hit for sure. Crazy to think how ahead of its time these songs are and like, how terrible anything that sounds like this now is. I'm fond of the No Escape stuff as well. Kind of heavy on the Downcast tip, I believe. D Siz.
Unit Pride "s/t" (Step Forward) Ha, this is actually the 2nd copy I've come into in as many months. Classic CA edge jam. D Siz.
v/a "We Shall Fight In The Streets" (Area 51 records, Catharsis, Integrity, Backlash, Congress) Obviously got this to fuel the Integrity obsession (which was kind of a letdown because it's just a demo track), but the Backlash song on here wasn't too shabby. D Siz
Wrecking Crew "Why Must They/Live At CBGBs" (Bridge 9) Haven't even heard this yet. Bonus with the CD when you order from b9. CD was pretty cool 2nd rate AF stuff. Choice cover songs, though.
Zero Tolerance "Bad Blood" (Hi-Impact) 3rd time owning this one too. What's up Buffalo? D Siz.
Cro-Mags "Hard Times: Live At Wellingtons" (boot) seen this around so many times, so it's cool to finally hear it. Worth it for the bonehead stage banter and Crush the Demoniac w/ JJ on vocals alone. D Siz
Dead Guy "Fixation On A Coworker" (Victory) People keep telling me how important this record was to 90's metallic hardcore. I was never into 'em back then, but after giving this a few spins I can see where people are coming from. This style has kinda grown on me over the years, so this is probably the right time for me to hear this record. D Siz.
EDPS "Blue Sphinx" (Japan Record)
EDPS "Edges of Dream" (Japan Record) Ouch. One of these is produced by someone in Friction, so I was expecting something along those lines. Instead this is really cornball 80's production riddled straight up new wave with like, processed slap bass and everything. Only spun these 1/2 a time each, but it was a snoozefest. $25 ppd for both of these off ebay. You win some you lose some.
v/a "tac0zilla: A Japanese Hardcore Compilation" (Harikiri Psycho, orig pressing) nice bargain rate sampler of rare-to-really rare Japanese HC singles. Brain Death was the only band I was really familiar with on here, and out of all this stuff Gogol Plex are the real standout. They come with kind of a Septic Death vibe, and I'm not just saying that 'cuase of the few lifted riffs. Traded for a Sloth/Carpenter Ant split.
In My Eyes "The Difference Between" (Revelation, yellow) As good as a 90's sxe LP can be. Feels good to track down a colored wax copy. D Siz.
Judge "Bringin' It Down" (Revelation, 1st press w/ purple labels) I always HAAAATED this record but loved the lyrics, and seeing as how I'm a lot more into juvenile reactionary straight edge hardcore now than when I was a reactionary juvenile I figure it's a good time to give this another spin, and it's actually pretty good. This is no "For Those Who Fear Tomorrow," but I can respect the influence this had on a lot of that Cleveland stuff. Oh, and the lyrics are still way awesome. "A Beer, a joint like a gun at your head." HEAR THAT DRUNKS AND STONERS? THIS SHIT IS SERIOUSLY A PROBLEM! Thank taco Judge is here to address these issues. D Siz.
Killing Time "Brightside" (In-Effect) I fucking LOVE this monster. I've had it on tape for awhile and it gets many-a-spin in the ol' Mazda. I mean, c'mon, "Fools Die?" And the Cro-Mags-->Kiss riff in "Telltale?" I fucking LOVE this record. D Siz.
Madball "Ball of Desctruction" (Century Media) I've been waiting to track down the 12" version of this for awhile. I mean, it's hard to improve on the perfection of the 7", but getting to hear "Smell the Bacon/What's Up With You" go into "Spit On Your Grave" on the live side is worth the price of admission. D Siz
Misfits "Legacy of Brutality" (Plan 9/Caroline, first press) I've been looking for a nice pressing of this for sometime. I know Static Age and collection one more or less eliminates the necessity of this record, but the sequencing is still pretty hot. D Siz.
One Life Crew "Crime Ridden Society" (Victory, green) Undoubtedly one of the finest pieces of "tough guy" hardcore of the 90's. Top five material for sure. Mighty awesome finally getting this on green wax. D Siz.
Rorshcach "Remain Sedate" (Gern Bladstein) One of those bands I always meant to get into, but their records were never convenient enough for me to come up on. Now all I have to do is actually listen to it. D Siz.
Stand & Fight "Together We Win" (Bridge 9, purple) I've said over and over again that any band whose webpage address is www.thestraightedge.com can't possibly be bad. Haven't listened to this record yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. Youth crew LPs are hard to pull off, though, so we'll see.
Starkweather "Crossbearer" (Harvest) I've been really into "Into The Wire" lately, so I kinda jumped the gun and got this off gemm for about $30 ppd from the uk just 'cause I got sick of waiting for a copy to turn up on ebay (and I have been searching for awhile). A few background listens prove the riffage not as crushing as on "Into The Wire," but repeated listens are meritted regardless. Seeing as how this came out in '92, it's crazy progressive for the era.
Suicidal Tendencies "s/t" (Frontier, 1st press w/ lyric sheet) Fuck man, I had a copy with a lyric sheet a looooong time ago, but for whatever reason I don't anymore, and that's bothered me A LOT. Now all that's changed. "I Want More" is my jam. D Siz.
Terror "One With The Underdogs" (Bridge 9, white vinyl) I feel like a tool, 'cause I've been waiting forever for this to come out on vinyl, and now that it's out I haven't even listened to it! What a jerk. The songs were great live a few weeks ago, though, so I'm not scared. Oh, and I have an extra copy on white if anyone has an extra copy on gold. Let's do it.
Skrewdriver "Boots and Braces" (Rock-O-Rama) This collects their material after the Chiswick/'77 stuff and right up to the "White Power" single with some extras. I don't know much (anything) about Oi or skinhead culture or anything, but I do know dummy hard rock stuff when I hear it, and a lot of this stuff, the best material is the more hard rock oriented stuff. I mean, I'm sorry, but the dude playing the solos on the Built Up/Knocked Down single and Back With A Bang is just too fucking solid a player to call this punk or oi or whatever. The opening cuts from the "Back With A Bang" 12" is notable mostly for the absolutely rabid vocal delivery. I mean, if you want to hear truly snarling furious vocals listen to the "Playing that rock and roll music/rock is gonna get us banned" part of "I Don't Like You" over and over again. "Back With A Bang" also sounds like it could be on the first Motorhead album, Wallis-esque backup vocals and all. The next few songs, the "Built Up/Knocked Down" single is without a doubt the best Skrewdriver material I've ever heard. Whoever they got to play guitar on that one can really fucking play, and I'm talking full on Wayne Kramer-cum-Townsend shredding. After the build up part on "Built Up/Knocked Down" when the toms come in and the guitar starts shredding you'll swear you were listening to Amoboy Dukes or MC5 or something. Truly fucking GREAT. The B-side songs, "Case of Pride" and "Breakout" are masterpieces as well. "Case of Pride" has this gnarly guitar sound, killer chorus, and these awesome Ramones meets stardard blues chord progressions and again, a fucking SHREDDING solo. The extras on here are pretty "meh." Antisocial is uninspired and unnecessary as fuck, and "Tearing Down The Wall" and "Boots and Braces," well, lets say if "Back With A Bang" sounds like the 1st Motorhead reocrd, those songs sound more like something off of "Iron Fist," mainly production wise. Still, the "Built Up/Knocked Down" and "Back With A Bang" material are absolutely essenial listening, and this is a lot cheaper than the originals. $30 on ebay.
Friction "s/t" (Pass) Fuck I have been waiting a long time to find a copy of this, and it was worth the wait. This doesn't really have the murky feel of the live cuts on "Tokyo Rockers," but the songs are still here, as well as some great slide guitar skronkery. There were a few really stand out cuts, but I need to listen to this 50 more times before I'll really be able to say what my favorites are, and I am looking forward to playing this a whole bunch of times. $50 on the 'bay and worth every dime.
Ultramagnetic MC's "Critical Beatdown" (Next Plateau) People have told me I need to own this for a long time, and I can see why. Really bizarre loops and samples (especially on side 2) and some really sharp lines. The more I listen the more I like. $10ppd off gemm.
