I am in the process of getting rid of my CD collection. Roughly a thousand CDs. I have three interesting observations
1. I only want about 2/3 of them on my computer. I came into a bunch of crap over the years.
2. Worth is not price. Some albums I love are selling for a penny on Amazon. Some I have never listened to sell for more than new (some in the $50+ range). It is hard to see that an album sells for nothing on Amazon and take that as "supply far outstrips demand" rather than "people don't like music I love." Prices send signals, but not about how good music is. Tricky is worth nothing and Happy2BHardcore is worth money? Worse yet, God Lives Underwater's Empty is worth much more than Life in this so called space age, when the second is a much better album.
3. Letting go of CDs is hard. Even once I have ripped them, so I have all of the information, and it is backed up, it is hard to see all the artwork and such go. I have not put a CD in a player in years, and don't plan to start. I never look at the art. And yet... The worst are the rare disks from bands I love or have met. Luckily they tend to be worth real money.
