It has been a very busy week for me, so far.
There is a whole lot of work to be done in the company, particularly in my workshop and our technician is on a 3-week vacation. Hence, at lot of things are coming down to me, especially since there are a lot of calls coming in from customers right now as well.
I am starting to have to shift more towards management than technology/service/maintenance/training/development, which is a bit saddening. I rather get my hands dirty than organize something and become a desk-jockey, but the way things look like right now, I don't have much of a choice. I will explain details at a later, more suitable time.
There are several trips coming up in the coming weeks. I will be going to Vienna, Paris, Magdeburg, and maybe Florence (Italy) and Dubai. Another trip to the US is also on the "to-do"-list for this year.
In addition to all that, I also have to prepare for an exam next Tuesday. I am confident about it, but nevertheless, exams are not made to be easy. :-)
Sometime in June, my brother and I noticed the clicking noises of hard drive-death coming from the server-corner. However, we did not notice any "degradation" in performance, neither as far as our router, nor the file server itself are concerned. Both machines run on Linux and given that I know Linux doesn't care that much right away if the system drive dies, I just waited for one of both to fail. It was not until the day after I came back from the US, that the file server started not assigning IP addresses anymore by DHCP. The DNS-Cache still worked though.
It was then that I shut memoryalpha down. I am waiting to bring it back next week, this time using two RAIDed CF-Cards as system-media. I have opted for the SanDisk Extreme IV cards, since they are very fast (40MB R/W, 10-year warranty). Connected to an UDMA-133-controller and after some optimization, I should be seeing good transfer rates and boot-times.
When and if this works nicely, I will be doing the same with Subspace (router) and maybe also with Engineering (my Linux-PC that I use to do work and configuration on Memoryalpha and Subspace).
Last but not least, I am still a bit upset by what happened last Sunday. What is striking me is that for some reason, loosing my friend from Boston hurts me much more than loosing my ex girlfriend.
