Just thought I'd say Hi

May 25, 2007 00:15

The conference I attended at the CDU/CSU fraction of the German Government turned into something quite different than I had expected and hoped for. I have already been to enough conferences where the big companies like Diehl, Rheinmetall, and other global Players say how good they are.

Ah well, at least I got a chance to see some of the non-public areas within the Reichstags-Building and to meet with some of the highest politicians in this country.

Unfortunately, one of our suppliers sent us a new (and virus-infected) software for one of our products. I had tested it on my Laptop, which became horribly infected and started to become more and more sluggish and unstable (the software was infected with Viking, NetSky and Trojan.Downloader amongh others). The three together turned out to be too much for the Avast! Antivirus I was using. So I switched Antivirus-solutions to AVG, which could only suggest deleting the infected files rather than cleaning them (deleting winword.exe amongh other infected files is also a way of "disinfecting" a PC, though not my preferred way). Finally, Kaspersky came to the rescue and my Laptop is happy again now. But it was already too late. The virusses, in addition to those that Trojan.downloader had added to the system had jumped from my Laptop to our office Lan through my VPN link.

So I spent most of today, my first real day in the office this week, disinfecting 5 Servers, 26 workstations and three Laptops. I mean it's not like we are not having Antiviral systems in place, we use ClamAV on the Mailscanner and Web Viruswalls, McAffee in the accounting department and Symantec Antivirus Corporate throughout the remaining LAN. Nevertheless, they managed to sneak in and could spread out faster than Symantec could intercept them.

So I ran eScan on each system several times, with different settings until every system came out clean.

I've had better days than today...

Anyway, tomorrow is another day and I will be heading to the US again. This time, Washington, DC and Dayton, OH (as well as Richmond, IN) are on the agenda. I am very much looking forward to the trip, I have to admit. On the one hand, I can hear the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian calling for me, on the other there are some very interesting visits to our suppliers on the agenda. I will be staying for just over a week, I'll come home on the 3rd of June.

Take care, everyone!
