I feel GREAT this monday morning. A very nice change, I must say. I'm wearing the same cute outfit I wore last night to dinner at UNO's (our final attempt to get our French friends to eat something besides a BURGER and SALAD -- to no avail!!!): a black tank and my patterned blue flowered skirt that I've been wearing for like, six years now. I agree completely about your thoughts on memorials and vanity. You sound a little like Rob in that he's forever talking about the greedy nature of our upper class. D was talking yesterday about the Zaca Creek fires in CA that have been burning ever since his June/July visit and apparently, since it's federal land, it takes literally an act of Congress to allow fire trucks and equipment on the land to fight the fire. This fact, and your question about the excessiveness of our memorials makes me want to have a contact line to representatives. I just want to ask the questions: what's the rationale? Just tell me why you think it was okay/a good idea to prevent fire-fighters' equipment from accessing federal land in time of emergency. I'm certain there had to have been a discussion about it before it was made policy. I'm certain they looked at the memorial on paper before voting yes to allocating the money. What's the reason? I just want to understand.
It is truly amazing how clear sinuses can elevate your mood. The humidity kills my sinuses too, and it gives my asthma problems. I would have been dying without sinus drugs.
Perhaps someday you and I can visit the East coast and take in the history, making sure to visit on a cool fall day instead of a hot, humid late summer one.
Your cheeriness is rubbing off! Yes! Let's cut work!! I'll wait for you to pick me up!

I am going to forward you the TNR article. It offers the rationale of the typical American sticker-shock and mistrust of those in charge -- which in turn worries the politicians who are afraid they are going to get voted out if they attempt anything REAL.
Crazy about the firefighters!!!
