so crash winning best picture meant a lot to me and my Angry Mexican Girl grad school friend. granted, i haven't seen the movie myself (because the movie was out when all of the "race stuff" was happening at my grad school and so i didn't have the stomach to watch the film even though i really wanted to see the film), but i hear it was amazingly powerful and didn't shy back from tackling the "race stuff" as bluntly as possible. i know i gotta watch it within the next week or something...
one of the crash staff said in his speech something like, "and i'd like to thank everyone out there who takes big risks everyday when the cameras aren't on, and who fight for peace and justice..." and my Angry Mexican Girl friend and i looked at each other and just started bowing. i really do think he was talking to folks like me and her in that moment, especially considering what polarized racial icons she and i have become in our little grad school world. rock out, risk takers.
which brings me to my next topic. there's going to be a show on fox (yes, i know i haven't watched fox since i was 13 and watching the simpsons, but this is going to be worth it) called "black.white." it's a show where they take two families (one a "liberal white family from california" and the other a "middle class black family from georgia") and they put them in a house in LA. the catch is that makeup artists will be switching all of their skin tones. the white family will be black, and the black family will be white, and they will co-exist in this house in LA and see what happens to their lives and their life philosophies. the previews look amazing. (they have a myspace profile that's advertized on their TV commercials, and i have them on my friends list if you wanna check it out.) i think i remember hearing the white mom saying "i don't want to have to watch my words!!!" and i was all "oh, that's nice, so you're mad that when you're a black woman, you're severely censored and you want your White Privilege back? excellent. not so liberal now, are ya???" but i do appreciate her honesty, and i hope this show lives up to the hype and expectations we all have for it. watch it if you can, and watch it if you dare to face this "race stuff" once again.
