It's been awhile since I've posted but I want to ask is it fool hearty or stupid to develop your own style of sowrd fighting with a weapon that primarily isn't used for that "Style" or technique?
I don't think so. I mean, every style of sword fighing evolved from nothing to what it is today. It's all just an extension of yourself anyway. Go for it! And share the pics! :) Best of luck.
I don't do any western styles, but I am a koryu fencer, so I'll speak from the position of the Japanese Sword Arts. I can't necessarily agree with the above poster. People making up their own style with a weapon they have no idea how to use is prevalent in the JSA community, and these styles are largely worthless. The rationale that "all styles had to have a starting point so you're just doing the same thing they did," doesn't really hold up under scrutiny
( ... )
Understood. No worries I know what I am doing actually I was just asking a fairly broad question. One day I will try this though no time soon. Maybe once I advance in skill or make up my own weapon.
Take the advice that alot of others seem to be ginving you here and get yourself a grounding (i.e. 10 years of practice or so) in a legit style (verifyable koryu if you're looking into JSA or whatever the western equivalent is if you want to check out the other end of the spectrum). Once you get into the depth of these systems, you'll see that it might not be necessary to fabricate your own. Putting a sword in your hands for a karate kata or whatnot isn't going to help you make anything close to a viable sword method. Get into a legit system (prepare to do lots of reading and fact checking) and find out what actual swordsmanship is before you waste alot of time making a bullshit style.
Lmao you guys are taking this too seriously I said that to open up the topic. No worries I'm not actuall going to do this. Thanks for the advice though buddy.
i dont recommend unless you have thoroughly good experience with another style, you could then MAYBE adapt the style and tweak it a bit but i agree with the above post by thesupercracker and if you posted this at bugei sword forum or SFI youd get flamed up the ass lol.
hehe i dont care if you go and make your own style as long as youre careful, im not gonna be all anal and go "OMGWTBBQ YOU GONNA K33L J00S3LF!!!" lol but yes contreaversy is good as long as you odnt get yourself killed :)
Aw to heck with conventional styles if you can do it, I say. If you think it will work: go for it! But for curiosity's sake, do elaborate. What kind of fighting do you desire to do with what weapon?
Honestly Like above I was just asking a broad question to get juices flowing and also to get input, do to the fact I actually might try it out one day. Right now I've been practicing with a bo...in fact I always have that weapon makes me feel like it's not a weapon at all but an extension of my soul.
I would say yes, but with the caveat that you should have a good grounding in swordfighting or other matial arts first. It's fine to develope your our style, but foolish if you havn't had much or any training to start with.
Also, using a sword for a style it wasn't developed for is a shakey enterprise, because each type of sword was designed and refined over hundreds of years to be used in a certain way. In that sense, swords are highly specialised weapons. Trying to use a rapier like a katana or vice-versa will not yield effective results. It would be better to think of it in term of developing you oun style OF fencing, or your oun style OF kendo, or something like that.
Exactly! One thing I have done is develop my own stlyes of using a bo, katana, broadsword & short sword. I have yet to master fencing it always has appealed to me but I thought of it to be limited. Ironically playing SCII made me think about the style.

You encourage one to create there own sword style. So Please answer these questions.
1. How do you know your sword style works? Or is it that you "THINK" it'll work and therefore you say it works.
2, Do you actually have someone who tries to kill you using a sword so that you may test it? Because that is the only real way of testing whether or not your style works or not.
3. Do we still live in a world where the sword is a viable source as a weapon that we can easily use it and truly understand it?

I understand fully. Your point is valid and well spoken. I on the other hand have a brain and I choose to use it. One can dream can't they? Don't feel so offened or partial. The time of swordfighting is long over but if I fancy something I'm going to try is out.
Don't worry I'm not saying i'm anymore self rightcheous than anyone else I'm just tossing around an idea. What's wrong with thinking outside the box? No I've never used it to truly defend myself but I fell it's still ok ::shrug::.
I'm no master but I want to discover myself is that wrong?
