Down the Rabbit Hole

Got some questions for all the current/former college students on my f-list. Please answer, if only to calm the nerves of the soon to be freshman who has no idea what the hell's going on. And if you're not in college, just comment on how much you like the new layout.

1. What was dorm life like? How did you get along with your roommate? Any ground ( Read more... )

1. Ok, I only slept over for a little more than a week at a friend's dorm during finals week because there was a transit strike, so I'm not really sure. From what I can tell (and what mneiai has not mentioned), you need to be sure that both of your sleeping habits/sleeping schedules are similar, or at least you know the other's and vice versa. If both beds share the same room, you don't want a loud snorer, nor a person who stays up with the light on doing homework because he or she is a "night owl," nor a person who likes to stumble in at 4AM while saying good-bye to his/her friends loudly. If you are actually the person doing any of these three things, make sure that your roommate is cool with it/them.

2. Umm...a fridge if they allow it in the dorm. If you really like watching tv and not d/ling eps, then bring a small tv as well, just in case the people sharing the lounge don't like watching the shows you like. Of course, the usual stuff for survival (clothes, underwear, anything for personal hygiene/maintenance, etc.). Possibly a small bookshelf/bookcase or extra hangers/hooks, depending on how much stuff you have (but otherwise...no). Someone I know had a rice cooker in her dorm (not really sure if that was allowed or not, lol), b/c rice cookers can cook anything, and you don't have to go to the kitchen during cooking time when everyone is sharing the space.

3. I'm a homebody, and the first time I went to my friend's dorm was the first time I've ever been away from home, so I cried after two days =( I cried again after a week passed, but afterwards, I was ok...but that's just me because I missed home too much, and it was finals week at the time (also, I had finals later than my friend, so she would basically ignore me and go out at some obscene hour while I studied/ate/slept, etc., and she would bring her friends over and bother me at 4AM).

4. I worked on-campus.

5. I agree with everything mneiai said. It's good to have fun and broaden your horizons, but don't overdue the partying/alcohol/drugs/sex. Classes and your GPA are still important. Be sure to do all your work. College is the place to prepare for your career, and you should treat it seriously as such.
