I've taken a week to go back to work and think about A-kon some. I am thinking that a lot of the things I was noticing going 'wrong' were just things that were different than I experienced just a week before.
Anime North had a lot of people, but they were spread out all the time between three buildings. A-kon made me feel like a sardine every time I walked down a hallway.
I never saw any of the guests at A-kon, and I really hoped to run into Nabeshin. At AN, I was able to walk right up to Sonny Strait and get my book signed.
Up in Canada I made friends with many many new people. Not hard considering that I only knew one person when I traveled there. Everyone I met was so nice and almost always asked if I was enjoying myself.
In Texas I did meet some new folks. I got to know the people behind the Komik Market (Artist Alley) and we talked a bit about the business of conventions. I also came to be smiled at by a number of the artists when I made my rounds through the Market. Getting them water a few times on Saturday helped I'm sure. Not so many people to hang out with though.
Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed hanging out with the KC folks and it was awesome to see Derrick again. I just rather enjoyed leaving the convention and adding a dozen new friends to Facebook.
To be honest, I actually didn't mind the elevator nazis that much in the Double Tree. At least it kept them running throughout the weekend. I was stuck with just one elevator to my floor for Sunday and half of Saturday at A-kon.
I would really like to go back to AN next year. I think I'm done with A-kon for the foreseeable future. I'll head back to Otakon or Anime Central instead. I'm half tempted to find my way to Baltimore this year, but I doubt I'll be able to afford it.
