There are some phrases that, no matter how legitimate their meaning, should not be said at work without forethought or consideration.
"The men are here to caulk up a hole."
Luckily, the individual I said this to (and even repeated it to, when she asked "What?" before I realized what I was saying) is of good humor. She laughed, I thought about it, I looked away for a moment, then we both laughed as I rephrased the statement with less homophonic discomfort.
I'm sure those of you who know me well might find the image of me embarassed by a naughty slip of the tongue a bit... jarring. At least, it might sound incongruous. This is work, however, and my tendency towards ribaldry is buried under alternating layers of professionalism and weirdness. I'm an old hat at that, y'know. Made of leather and stiff felt. My feathers, blue or otherwise, are often left at home.
