Amber's eyes widened when Fred said she was going to allow Wesley to take care of her. She had been under the impression that Fred, the woman she'd grown to love so much over the previous weeks, was going to turn her. She wanted to say something but she was afraid of angering all of them. So, she kept her mouth closed and watched Fred and Rupert walk out of the room

Wesley raised his eyebrows when Amber admitted that her mother had never thought she would amount to anything. Oh, how familiar that sounded. Never amount to anything, always doing things wrong. The mantra of the parent for whom best was never enough

Amber smiled at Wesley's words. No one had ever said her mother was wrong. Usually, she was told to be a good girl and listen to what her mother said since it was rude of little girls to backtalk their parents. But now she knew she was loved and wanted. She saw the way all three of them looked at her and it made her heart fill with joy. If only her mother could see her now

Amber made the most wonderful little sounds, Wesley thought. And he rather hoped she continued to once she was turned. It would be such a shame to lose those, especially since she wouldn't be warm any longer. It was a fair trade, though, because they would have her with them forever
