Continuing my recent run of fair-to-middling, run-of-the-mill, average reads is Ian McEwan's Enduring Love. Joe Rose's life is turned upside down when, at an afternoon picnic, he intervenes in an unfolding tragedy with a runaway hot air balloon in which a young boy's life is saved but man is killed. In the process of trying to save the boy Joe's life becomes inextricably linked with those of the other helpers, and with that of the man who dies.
One of the helpers becomes obsessed with Joe, and with a backdrop of continual declarations of love and devotion, and with his own wife suspecting Joe of losing his mind, Joe tries to untangle the truth from the lies and tries to save his marriage and his life.
The book, for me, was terribly average. Definitely not a "page turner" and although the story was interesting enough it felt dated. In addition I didn't really relate to any of the characters, nor did I find the story believable.
I give this book 6 out of 10.
I'm beginning to think 2007 is going to be the year of the mediochre read, with only 5 of the 25 books read so far this year scoring 8/10 or above.
