basking in the shade of adrenaline

Today was a good day. Was at the CoC on time today for the Game Design class. We had a visitor Marcus Matthews of Blue Heat Games speak to us regarding the game industry. He graduated from Tech in IE and had a varied career, starting out in early multimedia developments at IBM before doing some development at Turner Interactive and then eventually doing big production stuff at Sega. He moved out of that and is currently working on games on cellphones.

Took good notes on his points, but I will summarize:

"Deals" - between distributors/producers and small game studios are very relationship driven. Track record as a team is very important. He gave some tips on landing them.

If you are interested in production and/or design, you will probably have to start out in some grueling testing job first.

On current platforms, development budgets are going up--standard teams at Sega moved from 3-5 developers (Genesis) to 10-12 developers (Saturn) to more than 30 developers on Dreamcast games. And the costs for labor and art skyrocket. This trend is crushing some of the profitablity out of the games business, at least on console. That is one of the reasons our presenter chose to get in the cell market.

On to MCP: we went over the convolution theorem in the image domain today. pretty straightforward.

Had a meeting with the growbot developers. Since the alpha is already done, all that remains is a paper and some footage of the game and some playtesting.

About the playtesting- If you tried out the game on your computer and liked it or didn't like it and had some comments, write a short blurb on your user experience and what you would change about the game. And email it to me. Much appreciated.

Had lunch. Received offer for job interview. Went to history class, during which we talked about lasers, as just another technology in the light/radio spectrum.

Spruced up. Job interview. Looks good. My friend Josh works there, so I have high hopes. Distributed mission planning applications. Was offered and accepted the GRA! The lively leopard print lady at the desk was reading us the Newsweek about bad fast food cleanliness. She has this friendly feel to her and she likes to cook and she offered to school me.

Bubble tea with hiddenwoman. Coconut Green Milk Tea. Excellent tea and conversation. We eventually bump into iwillfearnoevil and they go to their vagina meeting. All is well and I return home for nap and dinner.

Called parents and updated them. Checked off list of things to worry about. The list is almost finished.

Normally I disapprove of wasting time, but journey to the bottom of the sea really does it for me. So soothing. And all of the other orisinal games.

add:
thanks to Collin for helping me get my resume in the right spot
