If you were left on a desert island, what three things would you take along?
I suppose that saying "a replicator, a communicator and a transporter" would violate the spirit of this question.
If I were to be stranded someplace inhospitable, without companionship or the possibility of rescue, and I could take any three items with me, I would like to bring a hand phaser, a padd, and -- even though this is incredibly selfish of me -- an Orb.
A hand phaser for practical reasons, because I could use it for fire, to capture food, to cut down large plants for a shelter. It would give me the illusion of safety and allow me to believe that I could send a signal if ever I needed to send one.
A padd because without anyone else to talk to, I'd have to have someplace to record my thoughts or I'd go crazy. I don't suppose that I'd be able to take an entire library but there would be fragments I'd remember, lines from poems and songs, things Odo said to me that I want to make sure I remember word for word while I can.
And an Orb because with the tangible presence of the Prophets, I could never despair, and perhaps I would learn everything that really mattered in the universe -- the things I haven't made time for, the reasons behind all the science and politics. I wouldn't mind not being part of the daily lives of the people I love if I had that constant sense that we were all part of a common whole -- my allies and my adversaries, the beings like me and the ones that seem entirely alien, the living and the dead. Opaka had that bond with the Prophets even without the Orbs, and in time I think Captain Sisko did as well, but until I have faith as absolute as theirs, I would want that connection.
