left, right, left, right, left, right, breathe!

For the first time in a long (read: Very long) time, today I decided to put on my running shoes and head for a short jog after work. I'd left work about 830, which was relatively early, and arrived home about an hour later. Washed my face, and changed into my top and running shorts - a pair i hadn't worn in some time because i'd deemed them a little too short. But not today, partly cause it was late, and I was going to do a short one.

Its funny though, how one takes things for granted. In the past when i was running regularly the running shoes just felt like any other pair of shoes that I wear. But today, the moment i put on them shoes the feeling was magical. They were so comfortable! I liked the way the shoes hugged my foot, and the soft inner of the tongue. When i stood up, i realised that, for the first time in a long time, i could actually feel the pockets of support in the forefoot and the heel! They were distinctly more comfortable than the rest of the shoe.

And so off i went, plonking down the usual 5k route. It was magical, i tell you, feeling each now-laborious step underneath my foot. It seemed like i could actually feel the neurons firing in my quadriceps each time i landed, forcing the muscles to contract, and making me ache a little (maybe it was the judo training that day, admittedly). It felt good, too, to have balls of perspiration mysteriously forming on my skin and rolling off.

For sure, though, my cadence and form is now out of whack. What was previously a little pitter-patter of a footwork is now just a ker-plunk ker-plunk.

But nevertheless i did it! I went and completed my first 5k in ages. It's funny really - i've finished a number of ultras, and here i am feeling happy about a 5k. The little things in life, huh?

(:
