Reflections

It has been an interesting past few days.

After fighting with homework for one of Homestead's classes all afternoon, I stayed up a little too late with John--not late by normal standards, but I had an 8:30 AM class the following morning. I planned on going to bed then [12:30 AM], but Theresa kept me awake for another hour with her amiable chatter and distractions. I didn't mind too much. At around 3:00 AM, I sat bolt upright out of a sound sleep to a loud static-like sound, at which point I turned off my radio alarm thinking, in my delirium, that was the sound. For another second, Theresa and I looked at each other in the dark while I decided it sounded like a tractor trailer had parked outside our door with the motor running.

I was first to the door. Poking my head out to see the rest of my floormates do the same, we asked a collective, "Is that a fire alarm?" With the door open, it was easier to hear the underlying foghorn tone in the Mac truck motor. With sleep still in my eyes, I slipped on my sandals and a hoodie and made my way outside with everyone else. The firetruck rolled up, and after a couple minutes of scanning, I noticed that John and Nick weren't among the crowd in front of East Hall. Since they have a quad-side first floor window, I went and pounded as hard as I could. [My knuckles and wrist stung for a while afterward.] Seeing no response, I figured they were out there and I didn't see them. Five minutes later, I saw them jump out of bed. Fortunately, we'd all known it was a drill. Cubed and Zack came out late too which prompted John's comment, "Zack, you're toast. Make a new character."

I couldn't get back to sleep until close to 4:00 AM, and my dreams after that were filled with fiery buildings and failed escapes. I rolled over to see a glaring 8:28 on my clock radio. If you recall, I had an 8:30 class, but it took me a solid two minutes to figure that out in my sleepy stupidity. Luckily, the class was with my Photography teacher and he's pretty lax about things. I got there close to 9:00, and explained to him the whole story. He thought it was pretty hilarious. I'm glad he thought so. :P

I spent the afternoon doing more of the same homework, and missed a trip to see V For Vendetta because of it. I was pretty annoyed with that because I'd also missed out on going with everyone to Raymond for Jen's birthday on Saturday because I'd had to work at the Coffee House. But John, in his infinite sweetness, brought me a sub from Pop's for supper and promised that he would round up the crew to see it again sometime because it was that good of a movie. And he also planned to get people to watch Rent in the Sayce Lounge on the big screen on Saturday, too. Then we sat and talked for another two enjoyable hours about home, people, dogs, and his favorite breed--Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. I could talk to that boy forever. <3

As my luck generally dictates, it turned out that the due date for homework that I'd stayed up another couple hours doing after John left got pushed back a week. Later on, I retaped the photos that have been slowly falling onto my face while I'm sleeping with the clear packing tape I stole from home with some degree of nostalgia. I'm already nearing the end of my sophomore year--time moves on way too fast.

After adding to my sleep debt by working a double shift at the Coffee House last night until 2:00 AM, I'm still exhausted even though I stayed in bed until 11:00 AM today. Sleep time for the Coco.

college, john
