biggest thing I never saw
I can die a happy man...because I saw Jerry Only, Robo, and Dez Cadena perform as The GWAR. And when I told Jerry that I've always wanted to see GWAR live and how this was like a dream come true for me, he said "You have no idea what it's like to be told that, man" and just upright hugged me and my face was nuzzled in his muscley man boob. Awsome/disturbing/right back to awsome. Too bad there were too many Hot Topic retards in the crowd, though. I was 15 feet away from one of my idols. I screamed along with every song. And the second band didn't even show up, so that meant they got to play a longer set, so it was Street Urchins then BAM... GWAR. And Only can sing pretty good too... not as good as Danzig, but good enough to pump up a whole crowd. The first half of the set was mainly old stuff, then did some of the later stuff (from the Graves years), and had about 3 Black Flag songs where Dez sang them ("Six Pack", "Thirsty and Miserable", and of course "Rise Above".) Number of people I knew that actually go to local shows in Des Moines that were at the show: 2. And that's becasue Joe Ross was working attendance and Nate Fetus brought the place toilet paper and masking tape. GWAR opened with "Halloween", and afterwords when Jerry was signing stuff he'd tell people when they were walking off to have a happy halloween. This one kid was like 10 and he was just the nicest guy to the kid. He was talking to his parents as he was signing the kids stuff and said "Yeah, I just took my second oldest to see Green Day last month." and the kid goes "Green Day sucks" and he goes "He's a fast learner, isn't he?!" and everybody laughed.
