Death Note 2: The Last Name

Overall not bad. The second part was ok, more so than the first with the token girlfriend whose only purpose is to die for Light to get into the investigation team (a relatively poor reason, by the way) and the swift deterioration of Light’s character (killing innocents by the first hour D: ). But it’s a 4.5 hour for many volumes of manga, so everything is sped up, so let’s close one eye for the acceleration of events.

The adaptations in part 2 are then pretty impressive considering the time limit. Not that Takada became the chief fanservice for males and device to reveal everything L needed to know about Deathnote, but the whole linking from the vol L died (vol 7?) to the last volume of Light’s death was pretty cool. Miko and I were both cheated-- hurray for fake deaths-- and were moaning about the change in the “death message” of L from “I was right after all...”, our sole comfort to L’s dying, to “I was wrong”. D: But it made sense later when he didn’t die. -.- In a way unsurprisingly, it’s Light’s loss (how to get away with Light winning in the end? ._. too controversial), but it wasn’t an easy victory either since L paid his and Watari’s lives for it. The final scenes are also adapted from the actual manga ending, except L replaced Near, and Near didn’t have to sacrifice his life to get Light (Mello’s though, yes). But it was impact-ful how L wrote his own name just to give himself more time. And I like how Rem’s part was mostly kept canon. Even if non-manga readers probably all went away thinking Rem is male. XD

Then there was the strange possible loopholes, especially the one Miko spotted... just how did Light see Ryuk at the end when the Deathnote he touched was the fake one?

And then there’re the parts that lost impact, like the part about “nothingness” for Deathnote users seemed distorted. In manga Light already knew it and I thought the meaning was everyone goes to nothingness anyway. In movie it looked as if nothingness was just for Deathnote users and Light only just realised it from Ryuk. So that when Miko wondered why L looked morose when Light died, I joked it was because he just realised he was going straight for ‘nothingness’ too. :P

And the “it’s too bad we couldn’t become friends”. It seemed.. out of point given that they interacted so little, L didn’t even attend university, and like Miko said, what was he doing in uni that day -_- no reason but to bump into Misa.

The “L clenching fingers” because police were dying left and right also had no impact, I felt. Too rushed and.. just not built up.

And Watari’s photo beside dying L was Lol. :P I dunno, if it were manga you could still imagine him as a father-figure as Miko suggested. But in the movie I can’t feel the father-figure thing.. He’s just.. there. Sure it’s sad L couldn’t save him.. who knew Rem was so thorough -_- but otherwise bringing him up again when L’s dying is not necessary, I think.

And Miko was laughing throughout Light’s dying. Evil woman. *shakes head* Call herself a Light fan too.

Miko hasn’t finished the manga. She kept whining about the movie spoiling the manga, and I just said the same thing everyone assumed.. it has to be different, it’s movie version, they don’t even have Near or Mello, etc. Who knew the ending is that similar to the actual ending. :P oh well she’ll find out when she eventually gets to vol 12.

So from her pov it is a valid question when she asked why Ryuk did what he did. Hmm. I forgot why but it seemed to have made more sense in the manga. The reason was just that Ryuk feels Light has game-over-ed isn’t it? No more fun and don’t want to hang around-- ah yeah, the most important part, movie never said. So seems like Ryuk is being random. :P Not even an hour after he praised Light for remembering to bring him an apple, ouch.

Then the rest.. we were just laughing at silly things like Ryuk’s subtitles saying “I’m back, baby”. BABY!? XD And the poor character development of Takada. She was like an almost sensible person, suddenly turned cold-blooded murderer, and just as suddenly turned psychopathic. (Ok the last Kira in the manga also something like that -_-) And Misa too act-cute for my taste ugh.
Where do you go to complain about terrible shuttle bus drivers? I think I’ve mentioned before this one I saw eating something that wasn’t just snacks while driving. I hope it’s the same one, or it means we have a lot of terrible drivers on campus.
