Such a weird time

Mar 07, 2022 20:53

Livejournal launched in 1999, and for most of those 23 years, I had an account here. Some time frames were sporadic, some were frenetic; I met quite a few people, some of whom became very close friends. Livejournal was the birthplace of my first romantic relationship, and also the witness to its slow demise. This site was a place to pour out the gushings of all my emotions, the highs and the lows.

Livejournal has seen me through three engagements, some weird encounters, and a handful of jobs.

Some of my friends jumped ship early on for Facebook, but I stayed.

Some more left after a Russian company purchased the site and changed the Terms of Service to officially Russian-only in 2016/2017. I was not comfortable with their anti-LGBTQ stance, but I still stayed.

And now, Russia has invaded Ukraine and while I don't want to support that in any capacity, anyway, it looks like the choice might be made for me. Rumors are that LJ might lock off entirely to Russia only - and while I don't dabble in rumors, I also don't want to wake up one morning soon and find that my entire journal - the entirety of my days and ways for over 20 years - has just disappeared.

I backed up my entries - in XML and therefore not a perfect solution, but workable - with the help of a Python script. My brother helped me over the phone.

And now, I'm there. We'll see what happens.

I'll continue to post here until I can't anymore. If you are also on DW, you can find me as inchoatewords: https://inchoatewords.dreamwidth.org/
