MONTROSE - A 23-year-old Crescenta Valley High School graduate and a 21-year-old Sunland woman were killed Sunday when their SUV crashed through a guardrail on the Foothill (210) Freeway and overturned.
Daniel Morales and Mallory Peck were exiting the westbound freeway on the Ocean View Boulevard off ramp just before 5 a.m. when, for unknown reasons, the Ford Explorer they were in veered to the right, smashing the north guardrail and flipping onto Waltonia Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Peck was ejected from the SUV. The Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced both dead at the scene.
Morales, who was living in Pasadena, was passionate about football and played for both Crescenta Valley and Glendale Community College, his mother, Claudine Ordookhanian, said.
He played linebacker for both schools.
"He was full of life," said former Crescenta Valley High football coach Alan Eberhart. "You always knew Danny was around because of his enthusiasm."
Morales played football all four years of high school, with two years on varsity, Eberhart said. He also played on the team during a year they went to the quarterfinals.
He enjoyed playing many sports and motivating people, his mother said.
"He was also a hockey player and loved to surf and snowboard and dance," Ordookhanian said.
He was also in the process of starting a business called "Sainted Clothing" to raise money for kids who have leukemia, she said.
"He met a boy that was dying of leukemia and wanted to make a difference," she said.
Peck was a friend of her son, Ordookhanian said. No further information on Peck was available at press time.
