Christmas! Christmas was good. My parents got me Ugg boots, for reasons passing understanding, but they are soft and warm and my feet are always cold, especially at my parents' house because my dad is morally opposed to the heater, or something, so it was a good gift. My brother got me the first season of NCIS, which I am super, super excited about, and I got my annual stocking stuffer gift of a jigsaw puzzle, which makes me as happy as anything. Also, sadly, my parents finally got rid of my very favorite rocking chair, the big blue one they've had since I was born, the one I used to go curl up in with a book and a heating pad when I had yet another ear infection, but they made me a throw pillow out of what was left of it and they framed a picture of tiny!me next to the chair and gave me that, too, which I thought was sweet.
leiascully and I also now have a new cappuccino machine, some springform pans and an awesome new set of prep bowls and measuring spoons, which I am going to break in as soon as possible by making a
coffeesuperhero-adapted version of
this amazing cake. (I don't usually go about adapting recipes the first time I make them, but that devil's food cake on the original Saveur recipe has shortening in it, and folks, I've gotta be honest: I am skeptical about shortening in cakes. SKEPTICAL. Mary has had to hear me go on and on about this, so I will be brief, but to me, personally, it's an awfully strange ingredient to put in a cake, and I'm taking a stand. A cake stand. Ahahahahahaha. Anyway, while I was home I found a non-shortening devil's food cake recipe, and I'm going to tinker with it a little, but I think it will be yummy.)
I went to church with my family on Christmas Eve, which was strange, but not as awkward as I thought it would be, and then yesterday I came back home and did Christmas dinner with Mary's family, which was a riot, because they are funny people. We sang a lot of songs and made a lot of silly jokes and I think everyone had a good time, including me, and everyone raved (as they should have, because it was yummy) over Mary's Bûche de Noël. Then we came home and watched "In Excelsis Deo," because nothing says Christmas like a good Christmas ep of The West Wing (and because my TV Boyfriend Of the Month is apparently Toby Ziegler, who, my god, please be angry about policy some more, Toby).
Just a few! Because the archive is slow and I am slower, but here's what I've loved the most of what I've read so far.
01. These stories come first because THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE OMG AND THEY ARE BOTH PRINCESS BRIDE STORIES. And the second one is smutty! Like, Buttercup/Westley/Inigo threesome smutty.
a.
Family. THE TONE OF THIS, YOU GUYS, IT IS LIKE IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED THIS WAY IN THE MOVIE.
b.
A Different Kind of Happily Ever. (AHAHAHA SOMEONE FIGURED OUT THAT I LOVE THREESOMES. THAT PERSON IS AWESOME.)
02. Did you ever wake up on Christmas morning and go, "You know what would make my day the best ever? A story about Niles and Frasier Crane: demon hunters. Gee, I wish that could happen." If you've ever wished that,
YOUR DREAM IS NOW A REALITY. I didn't even know that I needed this story, but OH HOW I DID. And I don't even watch Supernatural, man.
03.
A Separate Peace, and just lovely work, really.
04.
Last Exile, Dio and Lucciola and gorgeous. I was a hair away from requesting this fandom and these people, so I am SUPER EXCITED OMG for this beautiful story.
And now, I think I am going to go make latkes, because when I woke up this morning I had a serious craving for them, and we have some potatoes what need using (and Mary has a new griddle to break in)! Later I might make cookies. I feel like it's a good day for cookies.
