For the last couple days, the hallway outside my office at work has smelled like pizza. It has also had cardboard boxes stacked in it. I commented on this to my coworker, who agreed. "Yeah!" she said. And, "I keep saying that, but everyone else thinks I'm crazy."
It's still weird that carboard boxes smell like pizza. Every time I walk through there, I think, "Pizza!" then, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!" and finally, "Right. Boxes."
Until yesterday it hit me.
Pizza comes in cardboard boxes, at least the cheesy, pepperoni-laden American style pizza that I am thinking of. I'm only associating the smell of cardboard with pizza.
This worries me. What does pizza really smell like? When I taste pizza, am I basically tasting cardboard? If I smelled a real, non-cardboard box pizza, would I know it? Is my pizza experience inextricably tied up with my cardboard-smelling experience?
I am troubled.
