He cried as their hands finally found each other, but he thanked the stars that still favoured him that Sepia could not see through the fog. He needed strength, and Gabriel was determined to give it to him, in any form he could.
“Gabriel?” The faint voice that seemed so distant was easily recognisable, as was the pain that laced it. Grief swelled in his heart and hope vanished as he realised that neither of them would last beyond this night.
“I’m here Sepia” he choked as he vainly tried to drag himself closer. “You don’t have to worry anymore, I’m here”
“Oh he has plenty to worry about Archirelle; your words of comfort are misplaced in this realm”
Anger flared as Gabriel’s tired ears recognised the voice, and the quote spoken so many times by his right hand.
He growled into the darkness, as the fog swirled to reveal the now winged demon in all his glory standing just to the left of Rientiel. Although anger of betrayal initially flared at the sight of him, it was surprisingly smothered quickly. Anger of his stupidity replaced it as he felt Sepia throw the last of his energy into a roll that brought his body to rest a hands space from Gabriel’s side.
“Lance you’re a Moron! What are you doing in allegiance with him! You of all people should know why I’m doing this!” he spat as the dark haired demon gave him a solicitous look.
“Presently you don’t seem to be doing much at all” He sighed indolently. “Aside from dying a quiet painful death. Faced with the choice of dying like a fool beside you, or living quiet comfortably in one of the free realms, I think you will find my current position quiet-”
“Profitable” Rientiel purred finishing his sentence as he caressed a reptilian wing with one of his own.
Lance was not quick enough to hide a shudder as the gold magic assaulted his system, but Rientiel either chose to ignore it, or else he didn’t care.
“He reeks of your scent Archirelle, and your teaching. That signature bite of yours seems to have made an imprint in his memory, but lacks your passion. I must say I am disappointed, but it is nothing a century or two could not fix”
“I can’t believe I ever saw worth in your words” Gabriel muttered as he heard Sepia suppress a cry at the sight of his mangled and wingless body. “You seemed so high, until I realised just how low you were”
Rientiel laughed as he drew Nydia and Sanar from their sheaths and started tracing them in the patterns of spell glyphs to disperse the fog and cold.
“A truism of the mortal world that has been heard a few too many times in my lifetime. But I entreat you; tell me what has brought you to such a high opinion of yourself?”
“You threw him into the mortal realm to cover up a crime you committed!” Sepia snarled, energy feeding off his rage at the sight of his lover’s body. “Then like a snake, you hid in the shadows and attacked him when he was vulnerable and powerless. The fact that you are a dishonourable jerk would be one of the major reasons!”
Sparkling blue eyes turned to him, as Nydia suddenly found itself buried up to the hilt in human flesh, a ghost of the high angel who had previously wielded it, fading as Sepia’s scream echoed the expanse.
“An important lesson for the future Dreamleech!” he said murderously as a twisted smile graced his corrupted features “Never liken one of my kind to a bloodsucking serpent!”
“My, don’t you have a complex” Gabriel snorted as he watched Lance like a hawk as the demon left his master’s side to retrieve his sword. “For someone so offended by them, you keep one awfully close. Tell me, does he beg for it, or do you willing feed him your blood?”
The demons eyes shifted to him briefly, and Gabriel saw a twinge of anger there, before he averted his gaze back to the sword, which he freed after a violent twist. His pride had taken an awfully big hit then, and with a start Gabriel realised exactly why. He really was made beg.
“Give me a damn good reason why I shouldn’t kill him now” Lance growled as he held the blade an inch from the skin of Sepia’s throat. Blatant anger coursed through him and even his sword hand shook, making the blade jerk around in the air.
“Check your anger Lance, he will suffer, but now is not the time” Rientiel soothed mockingly as he reached out a hand and signalled for him to return to his side. “Besides, he insults me. It is only fair that he sees me defile his mate before death.”
