thor: the dark world

i'm so glad i made it to the theater without having been spoiled for anything. not looking at tumblr for the afternoon helped because when i came back, there were uncut gifs on my dash of the faux!cap cameo, and i would have been sad to have been spoiled for that.

overall, i liked this movie better than the first one. i'm sure that much has to do with me having read a ton of fic set in the mcu. even if i'm not that interested in thor, he's certainly appeared in many fics, along with darcy (who's the best! i want her hat!) and jane. so, yeah, i really enjoyed it. it will be fun watching all the phase two movies with more of an investment, especially cap 2, because omg, i didn't even want to see the first cap movie, and now i'm all STEEEEEVE.

i was so glad that jane didn't die. based on the preview with the "what are you willing to sacrifice" line and hearing rumors that natalie portman isn't enthused about her role, i thought that this would be the last we saw of jane. but no! she lives! and thor even returns to earth and gives up the throne so he can be with her!

thor himself was great even though he had about zero character development. he kicked ass appropriately and had some nice moments with loki, so i guess that's okay. speaking of loki: i knew that he hadn't turned against thor and that he had survived before both of those things were revealed. yes, both were probably obvious, but i usually don't get even those obvious things. clearly, loki was invested in his own agenda in helping thor (i.e. getting himself on the throne), but i do think that he was honestly upset that frigga died, so i guess i have a sliver of sympathy for him now. i wonder what he did to odin?? i suppose the last thor film will be an epic loki vs thor battle for the throne of asgard.

i wouldn't have anticipated to be so moved by frigga's death and her funeral, but it made me tear up. it was a truly sad moment, and the cut to the scene with selvig felt too abrupt. i wish we could have had another scene to process her death.

i immediately extrapolated selvig's statement about his state of mind post-loki to clint. oh, clint. i do hope we get at least some character development for him in the avengers movie.

judging by the audience's reaction to the first-post credit sequence, Something Is Up with those energy cubes--i will have to look up what "one down, five to go" means. i wonder if it will be important for cap 2? maybe not, because that's bucky's story. already long-time set-up for avengers 2? now that would be truly awesome. ETA: the internet tells me that this scene might be set up for both guardians of the galaxy AND avengers 2. ha!

and finally, i wonder how the 11/19 shield ep will pick up themes from the movie. my guess is that they are also dealing with a weak spot between the worlds and things/people disappear.

also, watching the catching fire trailer, i realized that i completely identify with katniss in ways that hadn't previously been clear to me. i really love her character so much and i can't wait to see the movie in two weeks.
