First of all, next week is our annual tradition of
turning the tables on topic creation. You now have the opportunity to spend the next week cooking up your quintets.
Secondly, sorry this is posting late.
Crazy week.
Thirdly, I decided that this week's topic should reflect the content of
Thursday's post. This should be interesting. The
other Friday tradition is more typical for those who are not amused.
Finally, as always, please play along...
Five Muppet Songs
1. Tom Waits, "C is for Cookie." Let's begin by establishing how far afield we can go with the topic. This cover version of Cookie Monster's signature song does not exist, but by god it should. Years ago, several friends and I sat in the TV room of Thomson Hall, whiling away the time as we waited for
120 Minutes to start by dream-casting the all-star Muppets covers album. This is the one pairing we came up with that I still desperately covet.
2.
Kermit the Frog, "Once in a Lifetime." It's always a little strange to me when something that I think of as the province of a more underground culture shows up in a mass culture place. When the Muppets undertook a new television venture with the sadly underloved Muppets Tonight, I realized how far we'd come when the amphibious icon took on David Byrne.
3.
Ernie, "I Wouldn't Want to Live On the Moon." I have no nostalgia for this soon. It's just lovely on its own terms.
4. Kermit the Frog and Rowlf the Dog, "I Hope That Something Better Comes Along." Truer statements were never uttered by repurposed felt. I suspect this may also represent about the last time that a Muppet referenced drinking beer as a personal pastime.
5. The Muppets, "Pull Shapes." And this is also how far afield we can go. The Muppets, to the best of my knowledge, have never attempted
this pop wonder. But they should. You can picture that Muppety flailing during the line "I just wanna freak out."
