Steven Universe S04E09: Gem Harvest

That was not the escapism I was looking for.

Spoilers did save the world. Why *aren't* they getting grocery discounts?

I'm with
kate_nepveu: The timing's not the show's fault, but I am really not in the mood for calls for empathy for conservative white men with regressive gender politics who hate immigrants and change, and who will change their minds if we're just kind and welcoming enough to them, not to mention reorganize our entire families around them and throw them parties and chase after them and give them everything they ever want. So I hated the entire A-plot.

(I think it's also worth contrasting how the show treats Bismuth vs. how it treats Andy. Bismuth, coded black and female, gets locked away forever; Andy, white and male, gets incorporated into the family.)

Things I didn't hate:
  • Apparently Halloween doesn't exist in the Steven Universe universe. And possibly Thanksgiving. Outside chance Halloween exists and Greg just never takes Steven trick or treating, but (a) Greg would totally take Steven trick or treating; (b) Andy seemed not to have heard of it either.

  • I want more of Lapis and Peridot forever.

  • Seriously, Lapis does have a point about the discount.

  • Pumpkin is great. I am not sure whether I look forward more to its continuing terror of Freddy Krueger Steven or to it fighting back by eating tiny plastic men. If only Steven and the Gems had done as much to their "unintentionally" scary guest.

  • Pearl has learned how to throw the best parties. Or at least all the parties. And I feel a little warm glow when she says something positive about Greg.

  • All the Gems have grown so much. Peridot felt empathy to someone hurting and said something really generous. Peridot and Lapis have learned to make jokes. I love the Crystal Gems' horrified looks at Lapis and Peridot breaking down in hilarity over Lapis' bitterness.

  • "The real question is, where are my attack drones?" I'm so with you, Peridot.
