Peter Rushforth's Kindergarten is $3.99 at Amazon (and seems to be under $5 elsewhere). The novel interweaves "Hansel and Gretel," "A Winter's Tale," a family recovering from the death of one of its members in a terrorist attack, and the discovery of a cache of letters from German Jews begging an English boarding school to take in their children during the Holocaust. I found it extremely powerful.
