I spend most of my time blathering on about music. This is absolutely undeniable. Seeing as I have a dissertation to write quite urgently, and the worst exam of my entire university career to revise for, I will now blather on some more. :D
Bands and songs that have made me happy in the last month:
a) The Last Shadow Puppets - Separate and Ever Deadly
http://www.box.net/shared/d6jmq6o9cdThis song is angry and vitriolic and has beautiful violins in the background. There is absolutely no reason why you should not be LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW. It is extremely annoying to realise that this band? Is Alex Turner's SIDE project. Making amazing music with this band is what he does in his spare time when he's not making equally fantastic music of a completely different sort with the Arctic Monkeys. Miles Kane of the Rascals is the co-frontman and is equally infuriating.
b) The Kills - Cheap and Cheerful
http://www.box.net/shared/82qlqsezakI love this band and have loved them for years, now. I rediscover them every year just as I need to start studying because there is a quality in VV's voice that makes me melt and sigh. And yes, she makes studying bearable again. Thankfully, adamant refusal on VV's part has kept Kate sodding Moss from performing live with the band despite her constant whining about it to her boyfriend (the band's other member), and TAKING SINGING LESSONS.
c) Arctic Monkeys - Ritz to the Rubble.
http://www.box.net/shared/xbsf2xzjboMy nickname is in this song and IT IS THE CLOSEST I WILL EVER GET TO HAVING A SONG ABOUT ME, SO FUCK OFF AND LET ME HAVE IT. Additionally! This song was written/recorded when the Monkeys were precociously young and ridiculously talented. They continue to be ridiculously talented (even if they've grown up a wee bit) and I would highly recommend seeing them live because they are fucking magnificent.
d) Quarashi - Tarfur
http://www.box.net/shared/y1ig2vncpoQuarashi used to be a hip-hop band from Iceland. They broke up a while back but not before they were a prominent part of the Ozzfest, Woodstock '99 and made me a very happy teenager. I'm not uploading their most famous songs (Youtube Stick 'Em Up and Mr. Jinx. The latter is my favourite thing they've ever done) because I love Icelandic and I love the crazy pronunciations that make no sense. Fun Fact about them: Hossi, the band's lead rapper for a while had to have a liver transplant at the age of 24 because of excessive alcohol abuse. He then celebrated by getting absolutely plastered.
e) Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry - Some Enchanted Strangers in the Moonlight Sonata.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYjQStQqdIYI cannot properly express my love for these two men. Suffice to say, they are two of the greatest comedic geniuses to ever escape the British Isles.
f) Seatbelts - Too Good Too Bad
http://www.box.net/shared/e87gqc9f9oI am a giant sucker for anything even remotely jazzy and this is spectacularly jazzy, fun and all around awesome. The Seatbelts (if I am not very, very wrong and no, I cannot be bothered to wiki this) have pretty much only done music for the OST of Cowboy Bebop (which everyone should watch.) but didn't really have to do much more. I would recommend getting the entire album because seriously? This is truly fucking brilliant.
g) Suede - Killing of a Flash Boy
http://www.box.net/shared/rib3jo7n1sSuede and Pulp epitomise sleaze rock for me, and this song is a perfect example of why. The song washes over you in the laziest way possible and sucks you in at the same time. I generally put the lights off and sit at my window while this song plays and seeing as it sounds even better with surround sound, you should MAKE THIS HAPPEN. They've done really fantastic other stuff, too: check out Lazy and Beautiful Ones (both off my favourite album by them: Coming Up)
Er. Right. Work. Meh.
