For reference, and because I had nothing better to do with my post-waking, pre-first-coffee brain, this hasn't happened since 1998, and won't happen again until 2015.

That's pretty funny, we were talking about that maybe ten minutes before I read this post. John's birthday is the 13th of November, and he likes when it lands on a Friday. Three is the maximum Friday the 13ths that will happen in a year and it will any year John's birthday is a Friday except leap years.
