[oo4] Character Bibliography: Monday: five images

I honestly don't feel this one as a literal meaning toward the necktie itself. I think Ianto likes being well-dressed, cutting dapper lines in a suit. A suit is an image of power, it makes him look put together, and probably lends a sense of self-control even when he wants to feel anything but. But it's equally confining, because it's a persona that he slides into, every time he puts that suit on. I would imagine that directly following Canary Wharf, the professional image was both salvation and downfall.

II. coffee by ~filip5
This one probably strikes as a bit of an obvious choice. The association of Ianto with the excellent coffee he brews. It symbolizes a lot about him as a character ... serving everyone their preferred coffee/tea/etc. every morning at Torchwood Three. Becoming the teaboy. People noticing he's missing more because the coffee is missing. But I like to think every morning that he has his own perfect cup - no cream, no sugar, before the suit goes on.

III. first day of my life by ~static-tmg
The stopwatch. Although Ianto jokingly claims that it's the button on the top, he's a person who operates on precision and time-tables. Plus, the stopwatch has become a bit of symbolism for his relationship with Jack ... not just because of the sexual connotations (stopwatch pr0n!), but because being with Jack has made Ianto considerably more conscious of time and how much of it he might not have. Right now, the idea that Jack will live forever and he might have only a second in comparison scares him. A lot.

IV. Cardiff Bay Low Light by =proudlywelsh
Being Welsh is actually an important part of Ianto's personal identity, even though he's left his home before, and currently no longer lives there. He grew up not far away from Cardiff, and some of his happiest memories are there, finding a home with Torchwood Three, beginning his relationship with Jack. I think he misses it, a lot, and secretly would jump at the chance to go back. Alas, commitments in London restrain him from that possibility at this point in time.

V. Broken Home by *contey
This sort of sums up that ... what Ianto would really like to have out of life is a little simplicity. Maybe not the wife, two-point-five kids, and a picket fence ... but some sense of normalcy, and definitely a family. But instead, he has Torchwood, which is anything but simple, and as time goes on he begins to believe more and more that he will never achieve those other things. They were largely a symbol of what he wanted with Lisa, and now that she's dead, he's learning to cope with different concepts, including the life he has.
