I'm in a foul mood today, for a variety of reasons, most of them minor. But there's a new
Where the Hell is Matt video, and if it doesn't make you cry, well, you're made of sterner stuff than I am.
Look over here! There's a
a ridiculously cute amur leopard cub! Book View Cafe has a recipe for
a summer fruit pudding that looks kind of cool. Hmm, who will I experiment on with this?

Via the Danger Room: the five worst arguments
for government secrecy.
I had a conversation with a friend last weekend about on-the-job gender discrimination and why, as an engineer in high tech, she hadn't ever complained about it (although she certainly suffered from it). And I was reminded of that when I came across
this post: it's in the context of an ongoing discussion about harassment policies (or the lack thereof) in the atheist/skeptics community. Ashley Miller had described being harrassed at a conference a few years ago and the conference organizers' response (they removed the guy), and
this post shows one of the reasons why women don't report harassment and discrimination. Because to some people, no proof of sexual harassment is actually proof of harassment.
There's some awesome writing at The Rumpus.
This essay about a child caring for a disabled parent will break your heart. My god, there has to be a better way.
On that same general topic of health care, Maggie at BoingBoing will probably
have an abortion this week. I'm so impressed that she's talking about it, and happily (so far) all the comments are positive, supportive ones. The World's Shittiest Secret Society, indeed.
Let's end this section on a happier note, with
a nice legal fisking of that lawyer suing The Oatmeal, Defenders of Wildlife, and the American Cancer Society. *
I don't think I ever realized how much I owed to Title IX. In elementary school, I played softball; in junior high I played soccer and did archery; in high school I ran track, did gymnastics (I was awful), and played soccer. Other than some grumbling about how the soccer teams had to practice on a field full of gopher holes and goose poop, with stubble so sharp it cut your skin when you fell, I felt no sense of discrimination.
But
this post about a legendary Olympian's high school athletic career is pretty telling (H/t to Geek Feminism). It reminds me of
Kathrine Switzer's story of how she trained for the Boston Marathon in 1967. There was no provision for women runners at Syracuse, so she ran with the men's team.
Outside has a great post on
climbing with babies. Becoming a parent doesn't necessarily mean the end of an adventurous lifestyle, after all.

Adam Roberts reviews the new Pratchett & Baxter collaboration
at the Guardian. Sounds worth reading.
Alan Sepinwell finds the new Sorkin show on HBO, Newsroom, to be
clumsy, patronizing, and self-righteous. I'm not really surprised.
I'm going to be out of town next weekend, so I won't be able to see the season finale of Korra until Sunday night. To hold us over until we do see it, here's
a WSJ interview with DiMarino & Konietzko. [Note: there are a few mild spoilers in that interview!]
... oh my goodness,
look who's writing Avengers fic! WHeeeee!
Finally, in Lymond news: I think I have found my
Jerott Blyth. Doesn't he have magnificent eyes?
