Alyssa Rosenberg has a great post up today on
the reaction to Spike Lee's comments at Sundance about Hollywood's lack of interest in black people.
Remember the Vida studies about the relative proportion of men and women writers & reviewers in major newspapers and literary magazines? Well, the Boston Phoenix has
crunched the numbers on NPR. NPR and WBUR talked about male writers about 70 percent of the time. Of the roughly 60 works of fiction discussed on NPR, only about 20 were written by women. Oh, Terry Gross, no.
So some talking head on Fox News accused The Muppets of undermining capitalism because the Big Bad was a rich oil baron.
The Muppets have a response to this idiocy. Hanne Blank has a new book out, on
the history of heterosexuality. Sounds kind of fascinating.

The New Yorker has a long piece on the trial of the roommate of the
gay Rutgers student who committed suicide after his roommate snooped on him electronically. It seems, as we should have predicted, that things were more complicated than the original news reports assumed. (Although still tragic.)

Within the last few years, I brought some white bean and kale soup to a friend who had just started chemotherapy. Which is an odd coincidence, because today's
Tea and Cookies post is for white bean and kale soup that Tara makes for a friend getting chemo. I am glad to find this recipe, though, because my soup wasn't very good, and this recipe looks much heartier.
(My friend, by the way, is in remission. Yay for modern medicine!)

Apparently Liam Neeson's new action flick, The Grey (note the British spelling!), is
pretty good. However, I really would like to hear from a wildlife biologist on this, as my understanding is that there are very few wolf attacks on humans, particularly not on groups of humans.
(I know, I know, it's a movie!)
One for the Money, on the other hand, the movie based on Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, is reported to be
"weary and uninspired". Bit of a pity, that: it would have been nice to have a new action movie franchise anchored by a female lead.
Mark Watches just got to the end of
Season 2 of Buffy. Yeah, that episode. I think I have the S2 dvds at home: I may have to fire up that episode, it's so awesome.

Know anyone in the Bay Area
looking for a job? The hours are long, but the views are incredible.
The Big Picture today documents
our dependence on coal.
